Liquid Computing, once one of Ottawa's most promising startups, has started winding up operations after falling victim to a financing crisis that is cutting a swath through technology companies. “We thought we were in position for a new round of funding but two of our three major investors were unable to contribute," Liquid chairman Adam Chowaniec said.
Investors had poured about US$50 million U.S. into developing the Liquid technology that combines hardware, software and operating systems to speed operations and cut costs of data centres by up to 80%.
Increased efficiency and better management are critical to building government information technology in fiscal 2011, said federal IT officials at an event in McLean. The Columbia City Council last night took a major step toward future economic development by approving incentives to entice high-tech industries to set up shop in Columbia. Data centre operator Sentinel Data Centers and construction firm Russo Development have announced they have started building a large multi-tenant data centre in Somerset, New Jersey. The existing 230,000 sq ft single-story building is located on a 22.5 acre site, with the potential of expanding to 330,000 sq ft.

Education Management Corp. has selected the former Deluxe Check Printing building in Robinson as the site for its new US$24 million data centre as part of its expansion program that will include 160 new jobs and two active data centres. Verizon Wireless has confirmed that data service outages affected eastern US customers for up to four hours early Wednesday. The company blamed the outage, which affected some users between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. EST today, on defective software in one of its data centres.
In an e-mail, a Verizon Wireless spokesman said some users experienced outages, some were hit with service slowdowns and others were not affected at all. "We found the problem in one of our centres, switched out the software and are now doing [a] root cause investigation," the spokesman said.

Ethernet switching company Force10 Networks this week filed for a US$144 million IPO. The amount of shares and the price were not disclosed. Data centre operator Corporate Colocation has announced it recently built a new green data centre in Los Angeles that cuts energy consumption and reduces energy costs. Corporate Colocation hired engineers to design a free cooling system within the facility that would filter the cool Los Angeles air and use it to cool the data centre.
The system takes the hot air from the servers and distributes it from the hot aisles in the data centre. On days when it is too hot for free cooling the mechanical coolers kicks in.

US regulators will propose a rule, aimed at high-frequency traders, to ensure all market participants have equal access to market data, the head of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission has said. “We are doing a proposed rule on colocation to best promote ... open access," CFTC Chairman Gary Gensler said. "If there are such facilities (we want to ensure) that they be open and fair and consistent access."
Globecomm Systems, a provider of satellite-based communications infrastructure solutions and services, said it has received an infrastructure contract valued at US$4.6 million.

The state Senate has approved a temporary tax exemption for companies that want to build server farms in Washington. The measure now heads to the House for further consideration. The measure grants a sales and use tax exemption for eligible server equipment and power infrastructure at eligible computer data centres.
The centres must be located in a rural county, have at least 20,000 sq ft dedicated to housing servers. They also must have started construction between April 1, 2010 and July 1, 2011. The exemption ends on April 1, 2018.
Telus has said it will spend C$650 million this year to extend the reach and speed of its wireline and wireless broadband services in the western Canadian province of Alberta.It will also expand its wireless broadband network throughout the province, building on its November launch of a national high-speed network.

Digital Realty Trust, the world's largest wholesale data centre provider, has completed the first lease agreements at its new Datacenter Park - Dallas property located in Richardson, Texas. The first customers that will establish data centres at the property include a FORTUNE 500 global company and a leading IT services provider. Digital Realty Trust acquired a 60% joint venture interest in the 69-acre property in September 2009, and immediately began construction on the first phase of the redevelopment to meet strong demand for data centre space in the Dallas metropolitan market.
Mankato-based Enventis, a subsidiary of HickoryTech, began installing an integrated MPLS network for Minneapolis-based Hawkins, with operations in 10 states. Hawkins said it chose Enventis for its MPLS network, which provided increased bandwidth, dedicated Internet services, and data centre colocation services. The Green Building Certification Institute has verified the certification. The Telx Group, has. announced its intention to go public through an initial public offering of up to US$100 million of common stock. The New York-based company said it will apply to list its common stock on The Nasdaq Global Market under the symbol "TELX". Telx is a provider of network neutral, global interconnection and colocation solutions in the United States. The company had 763 customers and 28,272 total physical interconnections within its 15 facilities as of December 31, 2009.
PEER 1 Network Enterprises has announced it has acquired Atlanta based VIA Net.Works USA, a privately held subsidiary of Clara.Net Holdings, in an all-cash transaction. Financial terms were not disclosed.
VIA Networks USA is a provider of primarily dedicated and managed hosting solutions built around the Microsoft platform for small and medium sized businesses. During calendar year 2009, VIA Networks USA generated approximately US$2 million in revenue and an operating loss for the year.
UnitedHealth Group plans to break ground this summer on a US$100 million to US$150 million data centre in Chaska, similar to the one it built in Elk River in 2008. UnitedHealth spokesman Will Holman confirmed that the company plans “to build a state-of-the art data centre facility” in Chaska to accommodate its “continued growth and help increase the company’s data centre capabilities.” The company said the cost is confidential.
Apparent Networks has issued a new Performance Advisory detailing an outage in Terremark's vCloud Express services. Apparent Networks' Cloud Performance Center confirmed that a connectivity loss caused the outage, which took place in Terremark's Miami data centre. Businesses utilising Terremark's vCloud Express services from this data centre were affected.

ITC^DeltaCom, a provider of integrated communications services to customers in the southeastern United States, has announced its operating and financial results for the quarter and year ended December 31, 2009.
For the quarter ended December 31, 2009, ITC^DeltaCom reported total operating revenues of US$112.3 million, a net loss of US$3.5 million, and adjusted EBITDA* of US$19.9 million. For the year ended December 31, 2009, ITC^DeltaCom reported total operating revenues of US$469.3 million, a net loss of US$11.0 million, and adjusted EBITDA of US$88.1 million.
The Richardson City Council has approved a deal landing one of the largest data centres in the nation. Datacenter Park will be built at the corner of Alma Road and Collins Boulevard. On Monday night, the City Council unanimously approved a Tax Increment Financing grant of US$5 million.

Colocation and network services provider Telx has announced it has expanded its Manhattan data centre at 111 8th Avenue by an additional 21,500 sq ft of data centre space. Telx, which recently filed for an initial public offering in which the company hopes to raise up to US$100 million, decided to expand on the data centre to meet its customer demand.
Datapipe, a g provider of managed hosting and IT services, has announced a significant expansion of its green initiatives. Through a strategic relationship with Constellation NewEnergy, Datapipe's Somerset One data centre, located in New Jersey, will now run on 100% renewable electricity. Datapipe will utilize Green-e Energy certified renewable energy certificates through Constellation NewEnergy's NewMix Wind energy solution to match electricity consumption at its data center, while maintaining its diverse and redundant connections to the main power grid.
Natural gas distributor AGL Resources has said that it has made a deal to sell its AGL Networks telecommunications fibre-optics business to Zayo Group. The price was not disclosed. The Atlanta-based networks unit builds, owns, and runs fibre optic networks for customers in Atlanta, Phoenix, and Charlotte, North Carolina.
AGL Resources said selling the network operation would let it get money for its investment in a noncore business. It said it would use the money to pay down debt and for growth opportunities, especially in its natural gas business.
Communications provider BT has agreed a deal which will see it manage Cameron International's multi-protocol label switching network. Under the three-year deal, worth over US$12 million, BT will operate and manage the oil industry solution provider's global network services, including its integrated portfolio of voice, data, video and internet platforms.
The agreement will also see employees at the NATCO Group, which was recently acquired by Cameron, connected to the firm's IT network platform.
While most industries were negatively affected by the recession, the data storage sector actually benefited from slashed budgets, as many companies began to outsource their data storage needs during the downturn in an effort to cut costs. “[Customers] are outsourcing more because of the difficulty and the expense of putting up their own data centres. That has driven more and more business to the colocation and managed services providers,” said Mark Kelleher, a managing director and senior analyst at Brigantine Advisors.
Federspiel Controls has been awarded a grant from the US Department of Energy under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to cut data centre energy usage by more than 25%. The project will fund the installation of the company’s enterprise energy management systems at twelve State of California, Department of General Services data centres across the state.
Global, on-demand virtual data centre and hosting services provider SoftLayer Technologies, has been given a US$10 million in new investment, bringing its total of funds available under its senior notes facility to US$30 million, which will be used to fund the company's continued growth. AGL Resources has announced it has reached a definitive agreement to sell its AGL Networks dark-fibre telecommunications business to Colorado-based Zayo Group.
AGL Networks, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, constructs, owns and operates fibre optic networks that provide connectivity and related dark fibre services to customers primarily in the Atlanta, Phoenix and Charlotte markets. The company owns and operates a network of more than 795 route miles and 182,000 fibre miles.
Gov. Christine Gregoire has enacted a law to help spur data centre construction in rural counties by offering temporary tax breaks on server equipment. “The Port of Quincy is very excited about this new law as it will help attract more development and expansion of data centres in rural areas of Washington, such as Quincy,” stated Curt Morris, port chairman.

So when the time came to expand the data centre and upgrade the cooling systems Associated Bank installed a glycol-based "free cooling" system at its two data centres. Glycol is akin to the antifreeze in a car. During the winter, pumps move the glycol around, allowing the outside air to cool the liquid, which in turn cools the data centre. The compressor, a costly energy drain, stays off.

The commonwealth’s planned data and computing centre in Western Massachusetts has been handed US$25 million by Gov. Once operational, the new Apple data centre is expected to employ at least 50 full time employees. Digital Realty Trust, has begun expanding power and data centaur capacity at its 210 N. Tucker property in St. Louis.
