IBM is defending its performance in an US$863 million data centre contract with Texas that the state has threatened to terminate. The company told the Texas Department of Information Resources that it wants to meet with the agency to salvage the contract, which requires the company to merge the data centres of 28 state agencies into two facilities.

Major clothing store American Eagle Outfitters suffered an outage late last month, which sources say can be attributed to outsourced managed hosting, despite reportedly well-laid recovery plans for just such a disaster. American Eagle’s online shops, ae.com, aerie.com and 77kids.com, crashed on July 19, and remained offline until July 23, when many of the pages became available, but sluggish, until the afternoon July 27, when the sites were restored to normal.
California's Department of General Services (DGS) is equipping 12 of the state's data centres with an RFID-based temperature-control system intended to reduce energy consumption. Texas will begin looking for new companies to finish the data centre consolidation work that IBM Corp. was hired to do almost four years ago, state officials have said. Though IBM's day-to-day obligations under the US$863 million contract have not changed, the state is now taking the lead on the project, said Thomas Johnson, spokesman for the state's Department of Information Resources. "DIR has taken full control over the contract and will proceed to rebid all of the services within the contract," Johnson said.
