IBM is targeting the US government as its next new customer for its cloud-computing services. The company has launched its new cloud environment, called the Federal Community Cloud, which will provide secure online data centres that will meet policies mandated by Vivek Kundra, the Obama Administration's chief information officer, and that will cost less than building out the federal government's own systems.
Data centre operator Telx has announced it has launched its improved Web-based customer portal. The move comes two weeks after Telx nearly doubled the footprint of its data centre at the 111 8th Avenue facility in New York City.

Local media reports that Amazon.com subsidiary Vadata is buying 10 acres of land at the Port of Umatilla. The company already has built, but not occupied, a 120,000 sq ft structure at the Port of Morrow. It is intended to be a computer data centre. In August, Vadata secured35 acres more from the Port of Morrow, not far from the 60 acres on which it already built.
Economic developers in the region believe Vadata intends to build a few identical centres in the region, each with a separate power source, to provide redundancy for its computer systems.

The Army is preparing to turn over operations of all its data centres to the Defense Information Systems Agency. It plans to reduce them from the hundreds scattered throughout the world today to only 10, said the service's top network operations officer. How many data centres does the Army have today? Nobody in the service really knows, said Maj. Gen. Mark Bowman, director of architecture, operations, networks and space at the Department of the Army. Cincinnati Bell has reported lower earnings for the third quarter after higher interest costs for its US$525 million CyrusOne acquisition in June.

DuPont has completed the first phase of its new data centre in New Jersey and the second phase of its ACC5 data centre development in Virginia. DuPont has launched both phases on November 1, bringing online 36.4MW of data centre capacity and expanding its portfolio by 30%.

Data centre operator and colocation firm Telx has announced that the first phase of its 13,500 sq ft high-density expansion at its 350 E. Cermak facility in Chicago is now open for immediate occupancy. Verizon will get hundreds of millions of dollars of tax breaks for building a data centre on Lake Road, as it requested, but a company spokesman suggested that’s still not enough to lure the giant corporation here. What Verizon really wants to see now is state regulatory relief. Colleges are working to make their data centres “greener,” though power use by the facilities has dropped only slightly compared with last year, according to a new survey by CDW Government. Out of 152 college tech leaders surveyed by the technology company, 74% said their institutions are developing programs to routinely monitor and reduce the amount of energy consumed by their data centres. The previous year, only about half that number - 36% - responded in the same way.
Henry Ford Health System is expanding its Rochester Hills data centre by more than 20,000 sq ft – and bringing new jobs to the area.
The data centre and an additional building on the site are now completely leased by Henry Ford for a total of 86,000 sq ft. The centre has been leased by Henry Ford since 1987. The lease is extended through 2022.

Online IT infrastructure provider PEER 1 Network Enterprises has announced its results for the three months ended September 30, 2010, reporting a 12.6% revenue increase to US$26.3 million from US$23.4 million compared to the same quarter last year, however, operating income, normalized EBITDA and net income decreased.
Compared to Q1 2010, however, operating income fell 51.3% to US$1.2 million from US$2.5 million, normalized EBITDA dropped US$6.5 million to US$6.02 million, and net income decreased to US$0.36 million from US$1.3 million.

Data centre operator Atomic Data Centers has announced the acquisition of IT services firm 1543AD. They have merged to add Microsoft Software Services to their cloud computing and data management services. Minneapolis-based 1543AD provides IT management and software development.

A State Supreme Court lawsuit challenges the validity of fast-tracked re-zoning, cheap hydropower and tax breaks already granted the project. An Article 78 proceeding seeks a full blown environmental impact study before the project can proceed. Justice Ralph Boniello has scheduled a hearing for January in State Supreme Court.
Engineering and construction firm IDC Architects has announced that data centre operator Quality Technology Services will expand its Santa Clara, California data centre by 55,000 sq ft of data centre space and 8MW of power. QTS originally announced the 70,000 sq ft expansion in May, which comprises of 55,000 sq ft of data centre space and 15,000 sq ft of office space.

IT outsourcing company, OneNeck, has announced it has entered into a two-year IT managed hosting contract with Fender Musical Instruments Corporation.

Google is running out of space to store virtual bits of information, prompting the company to send construction crews back to its Berkeley County data centre campus next year. The Mountain View, Calif.-based Internet search giant built two large boxy warehouses - both meant to store data such as Gmail messages, Picasa photographs and detailed Google Maps street-view images - at its 500-acre site near Goose Creek.
