San Antonio-based Rackspace Hosting is holding an invite-only job fair Saturday at its Austin office.
Max Thoene, the company's vice president of operations and site leader in Austin, said Rackspace could see the number of its employees in state's capital jump to about 1,000 in the next two to three years. Rackspace currently employs 300 people in Austin and plans to hire 1,000 employees worldwide by year's end, he added.

Over the past decade, the number of Federal data centres in the US has grown exponentially from 432 in 1998 to nearly 2,100 in 2010. In December 2010, the Federal CIO made data centre consolidation a key tenet of the comprehensive 25-Point Implementation Plan to Reform Federal IT Management.
Under this plan, agencies will close at least 800 data centres by FY15, a reduction of approximately 40%. As part of this consolidation initiative, 137 data centres will be closed by the end of 2011. The maps track progress to date.

PPL, working through the permitting process, will develop a 115,000 sq ft data and operations centre in Upper Macungie Township. If all goes smoothly, ground will break in the fall.
The centre will be built on a 12-acre site near Route 100 and Interstate 78, about 10 miles west of PPL's international headquarters in downtown Allentown. Completion is pencilled for late 2012.
The Navajo-owned defense contractor Nova Corp. will build a 50,000-sq ft data centre and office building at the Mesa del Sol master-planned community in south central Albuquerque.
The new building will include a 25,000-sq ft area for colocation and cloud initiatives. Another 20,000 sq ft of multi-use space will be used for the mentoring and business incubation of Navajo students and entrepreneurs. It initially is expected to employ between 20 and 40 people, said Nova Data Center Project Manager Randy Asselin in a news release.
US Airways said that it fixed a computer glitch that caused numerous flights to be grounded or delayed nationwide and was working to get its planes back on schedule. "US Airways' website and our airport computer systems are back online. We're working to restore operational order following a systems outage," the airline said, cautioning that "flights throughout the US Airways system have been impacted or delayed."
Early reports said that the glitch was caused by a power outage near one of the airline's data centres in Phoenix, US Airways said.
Google officials are moving forward with a US$600 million data centre project in Pryor that’s expected to bring in dozens of jobs to the state. Google will eventually employ 100 at the facility in the MidAmerica Industrial Park, Matt Dunne, a spokesman for Google, said.

Phoenix NAP, a next generation data centre and network access point, has announced it has procured a credit facility from Bank of America to fuel the next phase of build-out at the data centre, and future expansion.
In order to accommodate customer demands and executed contracts, Phoenix NAP will use the funding to add eight more megawatts of capacity, bringing the total generation capacity up to 12 megawatts. IBM has built a C$8.3 million supercomputer for McGill University. IBM is going to build a supercomputer cluster able to support the data intensive research activities of the CLUMEQ High Performance Computing Consortium. It will be the most powerful supercomputer in Quebec and the second-most energy-efficient data centre in Canada.
