Level 3 Communications and Global Crossing have announced that the U.S. Department of Justice has cleared Level 3's previously announced acquisition of Global Crossing. The clearance completes the process under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976 (HSR), and is effective immediately.
Level 3 also announced that the Federal Communications Commission has issued an order approving the transaction, effective immediately.

The federal government has expanded the pool of data centres eligible for consolidation and now plans to close even more of the facilities than previously designated. Chief Information Officer Steven VanRoekel said the government is no longer limiting its data centre count to those centres measuring at least 500 sq ft. Lifting that minimum has increased the number of centres for consideration for closing from less than 2,100 to nearly 2,800. “I wanted to scope it so everything was game,” he said.

An electrical fire on Sunday at a data centre of the New York Stock Exchange in Mahwah, New Jersey, affected communications connectivity to 58 trading firms, but the exchange expects "completely normal operations" for Monday's market open. The electrical fire was in a single computer cabinet at the Mahwah data centre, and was quickly extinguished, said Ray Pellecchia, a spokesman for NYSE Euronext, which owns the exchange.

Microsoft has agreed to lease the water treatment plant attached to one of its United States data centres to the area's municipal council. The company said that the City of Quincy would pay an annual lease fee of $US10 for the plant with the option to buy it outright in 30 years. The lease means the city takes responsibility for the operation, maintenance and management of the plant.
The government's effort to consolidate data centres will yield far less in savings than originally projected, agencies say. Instead of saving US$3 billion by eliminating more than 800 data centres by 2015, as the Office of Management and Budget has projected, agencies now expect savings of only US$630 million and US$5 billion over a longer period, according to an OMB estimate based on agencies' latest data consolidation plans, which were made available last week.

Attorney General Martha Coakley’s office has said that it reached a deal with developers that should advance construction of a computing centre in Holyoke. Apple has hired Scott Noteboom, the chief of Yahoo's Global Data Center Infrastructure, away from the Web company. Noteboom, who had led Yahoo's data centre operations since 2005, is now a "distinguished gentleman" at Apple, according to his LinkedIn profile.
He will likely be tasked with prepping Apple's servers as it ramps up its iCloud and iTunes push. Noteboom was the chief architect and founder of Yahoo's "data centre self construct / operate initiatives," according to a conference bio on Noteboom.
