Cable & Wireless Panama has been selected as the Government’s partner in digitising the majority of Panama’s civil administration. Panama’s Government launched the ‘Panama without paper’ project as part of its Digital Government program to move its documents and communications onto electronic platforms and reduce the paper it uses. Telx, a leading interconnection and data centre provider has announced that MegaPath Wholesale has joined the award-winning Telx Ethernet Exchange to provide carriers another option for accessing its Ethernet services.

The first interconnection will be in the Metro New York City region at Telx’s strategically located New York City data centre at 111 8th Ave. The Telx Ethernet Exchange will provide carriers with seamless access to MegaPath's Ethernet-over-Copper services, a set of economical, last-mile broadband access at speeds ranging from 3 Mbps to 20 Mbps.

Datalink, a provider of data centre infrastructure and services, has announced that it has acquired substantially all of the assets, and selected liabilities, of Midwave Corp. Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Midwave is an IT services and solutions firm focused on optimizing the data centres and IT infrastructure of enterprise companies.

Datalink purchased Midwave for US$17.6 million, comprised of a cash payment of approximately US$16.1 million and $1.5 million in Datalink common stock.

Fortune Data Centers, which provides premium wholesale data centre space for corporate customers, announced today that it has created a new development company, Fortune Development Group, to be run by Matt Mochary. Red Hat has agreed to acquire privately held data storage company Gluster Inc. for roughly US$136 million in cash, a purchase the business-software maker said will help it meet customers' "big data" needs.

Facebook has announced it has begun building a second massive data centre in Forest City, North Carolina, even before the social networking site's first data centre has opened. Facebook data center manager George Henry said the second data centre will mirror the 300,000 sq ft Building 1, which it recently completed and is now being equipped with its first batch of servers.

Harris Corporation, an international communications and information technology company, has been awarded a 16-month, US$9.7 million contract by the U.S. Air Force Space Command’s Space and Missile Systems Center to deliver network support services at Los Angeles Air Force Base in California.

Enterprise cloud provider Tier 3 has announced that it is opening a third data centre in New York, adding to current installations in Seattle and Chicago. The Seattle-based company chose New York for a third data centre after requests from East Coast customers wanting a low-latency option. It also adds another backup location and helps maintain Tier 3’s 99.999 percent uptime.

Tier 3’s servers will be housed at one of Equinix’s seven New York-area data centres.

Web hosting provider SunGard Availability Services has announced it has expanded its Philadelphia data centre at 1500 Spring Garden Street to accommodate growing demand for SunGard’s portfolio of cloud computing, colocation and managed IT services.

The move follows SunGard's open house in June for its 12,500 sq ft data centre in Nashville, which recently opened. The Spring Garden Data Center expansion incorporates sustainable environmental controls to advance green IT initiatives.

Digital Realty Trust, a global provider of data centre solutions, has completed the acquisition of 11085 Sun Center Drive, a 69,000 sq ft data centre facility located in Rancho Cordova, a suburb of Sacramento, California. The property is 100% leased on a long term, triple net basis to a leading business continuity and network services provider. The purchase price was US$30 million.

Rockville, Md.-based bioinformatics firm E-SAC has won a US$4.72 million contract to develop and support a data centre for the second stage of the National Cancer Institute's Clinical Proteomic Technologies for Cancer Initiative. The data center will support the second phase of the initiative, in which eight proteome characterization centers will molecularly characterize several tumor types

The government's effort to consolidate data centres will yield far less in savings than originally projected, agencies say. Instead of saving US$3 billion by eliminating more than 800 data centres by 2015, as the Office of Management and Budget has projected, agencies now expect savings of only US$630 million and US$5 billion over a longer period, according to an OMB estimate based on agencies' latest data consolidation plans, which were made available last week.

Attorney General Martha Coakley’s office has said that it reached a deal with developers that should advance construction of a computing centre in Holyoke.  The deal, Coakley’s office said, includes a promise not to sue property owner Holyoke Gas & Electric as a non-profit moves forward with plans for the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center.  “The agreement limits the liability related to contamination on the property in exchange for promises to clean up the property and pursue the redevelopment project,” Coakley’s office said.

HP Enterprise Services has signed two five-year pacts with US Airways for applications management and data centre hosting services.

The agreements are renewals and HP “will continue to play a key part in synchronizing the business operations of US Airways around the airline’s flight-operating system maintenance,” an HP spokeswoman says.

Cologix has acquired the Navisite data center located in the Dallas Infomart, Canix Colo in Montreal, Telehouse Centre Canada in Toronto and Vancover as well as Standard Connections in Toronto. Cologix says that each of the acquired companies' leadership and operating staff has joined the Cologix team.

The City of Edmonton is partnering with a locally based company to host its new data centre. ATCO I-Tek, an Edmonton-headquartered company specializing in managed data centre services, was awarded the three-year contract, with a renewal option for up to ten years, based on their proven abilities. “The City is excited to have the opportunity to use local technical expertise to help achieve its business goals,” says Chris Moore, Chief Information Officer for the City of Edmonton.

A federal cloud computing solicitation can't restrict the global location of data centres absent a legitimate government need--which the General Services Administration failed to do when it issued a May request for quotation for cloud-based email, office suite applications and records management services, says the Government Accountability Office.

Apple has hired Scott Noteboom, the chief of Yahoo's Global Data Center Infrastructure, away from the Web company. Noteboom, who had led Yahoo's data centre operations since 2005, is now a "distinguished gentleman" at Apple, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He will likely be tasked with prepping Apple's servers as it ramps up its iCloud and iTunes push. Noteboom was the chief architect and founder of Yahoo's "data centre self construct / operate initiatives," according to a conference bio on Noteboom.

Fortune Data Centers, which provides premium wholesale data centre space for corporate customers, has announced that the company is expanding beyond Silicon Valley to the Portland area of Oregon.

AMERICAN SYSTEMS, a leading provider of federal IT and engineering solutions, has announced the award of the Cloud Computing and IT Support Services contract by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA). The award was made under the ENCORE II Multiple Award Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity contract, which provides the Department of Defense and other federal agencies with a full range of IT solutions.

Three new data centres are showing interest in setting up shop in Prineville, but city and county officials say they need 10 more megawatts of electricity to supply start-up power for the centres. Central Electric Cooperative planned to supply it, but the Bonneville Power Administration said, not so fast.

Nutanix, the first company to offer a radically simple compute and storage building block for virtualizing data centres without the need for network storage, has announced US$25 million in new funding in a Series B round led by venture capital firm Khosla Ventures. Apple has quietly begun work on a solar farm that apparently could help power its sprawling data centre in southern Catawba County. Permits issued by Catawba County show that the Cupertino, Calif., company has been approved to reshape the slope of some of the 171 acres of vacant land it owns on Startown Road, opposite the data centre, in preparation of building a solar farm.

CSC has announced that it has signed a five-and-a-half year information technology operations outsourcing contract renewal and expansion with Educational Testing Service (ETS), the leader in advancing quality and equity in education for people worldwide.
