IT consulting firm GlassHouse Technologies has filed for a US$75 million initial public offering, after canceling a previous attempt to go public. GlassHouse initially filed a US$100 million IPO registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission in December 2007, but pulled the plug on the IPO in March 2009 because of poor market conditions.

The organizers and researchers of 6th Data Centres Europe 2010 have announced that Christian Belady, Principal Infrastructure Architect at Microsoft, will keynote at the event.

The event will take place at the Espaces Antipolis, near Nice, France 22-23 April 2010. The 6th Data Centres Europe 2010 will include a special focus on enterprise customers of data centres and their evolving outsourcing needs as emerging private clouds, new technologies and market shift impact across the sector.

Digital Realty Trust has announced the results of its leasing activity for both the fourth quarter and full year 2009. For the full year 2009, lease signings represent over US$472 million in total cash contract value.

Reykjavík City Council has approved the applications of software company Greenstone for lots for a possible data centre in the city. The lots are located at Hádegismóar near the Morgunbladid newspaper printworks and by Lambhagavegur in the Grafarholt district.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has issued an executive order calling for a drastic reduction in the state's data centre footprint and energy consumption and requiring all state agencies to appoint CIOs and information security officers.

The state aims to reduce its data centre space by 50% by July 2011 and to cut energy usage from IT operations 30% by July 2012. Among systems to be consolidated under the order are networks, e-mail, and anti-spam and encryption services. The state plans to standardise PCs and security services across the agencies and departments.

US technology services provider Computer Sciences Corp reported a quarterly profit ahead of analysts' projections as it benefited from demand in outsourcing amid signs that technology spending was rebounding with the improving economy.

The company, which provides technology and outsourcing services to companies and government agencies, reaffirmed its outlook for fiscal year 2010. Net income for the third quarter ended Jan. 1 rose to US$216 million, from US$163 million, a year earlier. Revenue was flat at US$3.95 billion.

Cisco Systems is considering establishing a major data centre for the Asian region in Korea. Cho Bum-coo, the president of Cisco Systems Korea, said that “the company had originally planned to set the centre up in Malaysia, but with its recent agreement with the city of Incheon to erect the U-City Global Center in Songdo, Incheon, it has recognized the potential of the Korean market and has begun to consider Songdo as a possible candidate for the data centre.”

Microsoft is a relative latecomer to virtualisation, at least in servers, but the firm has been making aggressive moves in the past few years to grab a larger share of the market. However, virtualisation is more than just about consolidating servers, and is also a key part of Microsoft's plans to build up its cloud computing strategy.

Managed services provider Telstra International has announced it has opened its new London Hosting Centre – Woking, the company's third UK data centre.

In September 2009, Telstra began construction on the facility, which adds 10,000 sq ft of hosting space for customers seeking services such as colocation, managed hosting and network solutions. It was built to meet increasing demand for hosting in the UK, and offers connectivity to the Telstra Global Next IP backbone network.

Boosted by gains in its managed hosting and cloud computing business, Rackspace Hosting said that profits for the fourth quarter surged 32% - from US$6.8 million to US$9 million - as the company topped Wall Street estimates.

Staples, the Framingham, Mass.-based retailer with 1,872 stores in North America, is expanding its IT services capabilities in a move that will take it right inside the data centre.

NetApp issued earnings forecasts ahead of Wall Street expectations and delivered better-than-expected quarterly results, as the economic recovery boosted demand for data storage equipment. The company reported a profit, excluding items, of 40 cents per share in its fiscal third quarter that ended Jan. 29. That beat the average Wall Street forecast of 38 cents, according to Thomson Reuters.

Revenue rose to US$1.01 billion from US$746 million a year earlier, beating the average analyst forecast of US$955 million.

Atrato, a provider of high performance autonomic tiered storage for data-intensive applications such as virtual environments, virtual desktops, business and scientific analytics, data warehousing, and Web 2.0 applications, has announced that the US Department of Energy has deployed sixteen Atrato Velocity1000 systems in its Golden Field Office, to support implementation of its newly virtualised data centre.

Brocade has announced that one of the world’s biggest Internet Exchange Points (IXP), the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX), selected Brocade to deliver a new MPLS/VPLS network topology to increase network stability and resilience for its portfolio of 350 clients.

AMS-IX installed Brocade NetIron MLX series switches and routers to meet the growing demand for bandwidth that is resulting from exponentially rising traffic volume.

Sentrum, specialists in the design, build and management of bespoke data centre solutions, have announced the opening of the company’s sixth data centre in the UK - Sentrum Hayes. The recently acquired facility will host the new Sentrum Solutions service which offers organisations of any size a state of the art colocation and disaster recovery centre.

India-based cellular service provider Bharti Airtel is likely to partner with US and Australian companies to expand its data centre business. Media reports state that the company expects to close these deals in the next two quarters. The company is already providing data centre services under the name of Managed Colocation Services and owns storage space in cities like Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Pune.

An aerial video, captured from a helicopter, allegedly shows Apple's new data-centre located on 225 acres of land in Maiden, North Carolina. The enormous building is said to cover 500,000 sq ft of floor space, over four times the area available in the company's server farm in Newark, California. The project is said to have cost over US$1 billion.

Wipro Arabia Limited (WAL), an IT joint-venture between India's Wipro and Dar Al-Riyadh, has recently won deals worth US$750 million. The contracts are from sectors like education, telecommunications and banking in the country. They include a full range of services to be provided to clients including integrated IT solutions, application development, consultancy and infrastructure-related services, reported Arab News.

Logica's profits and sales dropped last year as IT departments cut their spending, but outsourcing demand is on the up and UK sales have increased. The supplier reported a profit of £272 million, a 6% fall, on £3.7 billion worth of sales in 2009. This compared to £289 million profit on sales of £3.8 billion in 2008.

Looking forward to 2010, the company said demand for outsourcing services is strong in the private sector and governments across Europe want to outsource to meet their-cost cutting commitments.

It is vital that more is invested in data storage capacity in order to meet demand in the future, according to one expert. Speaking at a recent conference in London, Alec Selvon-Bruce, EMEA Eco-Solutions Champion for Hitachi Data Systems, said the UK must look at how resilient its IT environments are.

COLT Telecom Group has said its 2009 pre-tax profit after exceptional items improved to  94.7 million euro from 71.9 million euro a year ago.

Profit before tax and exceptional items amounted to 85.0 million euro compared with  54.9 million euro last year. Profit for the period grew to 121.6 million euro from 71.9 million euro and profit before exceptional items climbed to 111.9 million euro from 54.9 million euro in the earlier year period.
