Teraco Data Environments has opened the doors of its third vendor neutral colocation facility in River Horse Valley. Dark fibre Africa, MWeb, Telkom, Neotel, Bitco, Continuity Solutions, Vox Telecom and Broadband Infraco are current tenants, with several other businesses in negotiation stage.

ITV has signed a three-year deal with BIS for IT services.  Under the deal, BIS will be providing colocation, network connectivity and Internet transit for ITV Plc and ITV.com.

The Environmental Protection Agency has awarded CGI Federal, a US$64.46 million task order for Custom Applications Management, including a one-year base and four, one-year option periods. The task order was issued under the multi-vendor, seven-year, US$955 million, ITS-EPA II Program Blanket Purchase Agreement, which was awarded to CGI in 2009.

BT has announced a series of investments aimed at doubling its business in key Latin American countries over the next three years. By recruiting 250 new staff, increasing its professional services capabilities, opening new centres of excellence and implementing a wide range of network and customer service improvements, BT will better support global customers investing in this region and help large Latin American companies expand globally.

A "power failure" at a major exchange in Birmingham has seen huge numbers of BT Broadband customers across the UK cut off. The company said those affected numbered into the hundreds of thousands - about 5% of its total customers. Business users were particularly badly affected, with many reporting considerable lost revenue as a result.

TelecityGroup, a provider of premium carrier-neutral data centres, and NL-ix, one of the world’s leading Internet Exchanges, have signed a contract to expand NL-ix’s capacity in TelecityGroup’s existing data centres and to its new data centre, AMS 5, which is currently under construction.

NTT Communications has announced that its Multi-location Disaster Recovery Solution (MDR), which replicates and stores customer data in remote NTT Com data centres to support the business continuity plans of corporate customers, will add a Hong Kong data centre to its existing line-up of 12 data centres in Japan, the US and Europe (Germany). Service applications have begun to be accepted today, prior to launch of the actual service in January 2012.

Switch has announced it has begun construction on SuperNAP NV-8 and SuperNAP NV-9, a 600,000 sq ft expansion set for opening in 2012. To support its objectives, Switch has concluded US$124 Million in growth financing with Citigroup, Nevada State Bank, Bank of Nevada, City National Bank and Intel Capital.

The Belgian ICT company Cegeka has started using its new and expanded data centre in Hasselt. The expanded data centre now has a capacity of 700 kilowatts or over 70% more than previously. Cegeka invested €2.4 million in extending the building, an emergency power supply and cooling infrastructure. It is the first company in Belgium to install two heat wheels from KyotoCooling. The investment is particularly aimed at helping the continued growth of Cegeka Outsourcing.

Additionally, Cegeka has data centres in Leuven and Veenendaal in the Netherlands.

Malaysia's leading carrier-neutral data centre operator AIMS Asia Group has been selected as the outsourcing hub for Taiwan's Acer Inc.

The federal government has expanded the pool of data centres eligible for consolidation and now plans to close even more of the facilities than previously designated. Chief Information Officer Steven VanRoekel said the government is no longer limiting its data centre count to those centres measuring at least 500 sq ft. Lifting that minimum has increased the number of centres for consideration for closing from less than 2,100 to nearly 2,800. “I wanted to scope it so everything was game,” he said.

The Upper Austrian municipality of Kronstorf is waiting for search engine giant Google to start building a data centre for which Google had bought 75 hectares of land three years ago. National broadcaster ORF reported that the decision to build at Kronstorf was made by Google partly because the company wants to use only renewable energy, hence the location near the water powered plants at the river Enns. Moreover Google has already planted 13,000 trees on the acquired land.

Data centre start-up NextDC has announced the opening of its Brisbane-based facility, B1. The company revealed that it has received a key document from a final building inspection, and now expects to start moving in pre-committed customers in the next few weeks. NextDC will offer racks, blocks and private suites to customers of the facility.

Research from Techaisle's SMB Managed Services report indicates that small to medium-size businesses (SMBs) in the U.S. will be spending US$7 billion on managed services in 2011 and will continue to grow in double digits for the next several years, an increment of more than a billion dollars each year. Data centre provider M247 has completed the purchase of a new building in Trafford Park which will boost its capacity five-fold. The company has acquired the new 8,500 sq ft building, which neighbours its current 7,000 sq ft headquarters, to meet increasing demand for its services. Almost a third of the new 'carrier neutral' data centre will be taken up by customers already with M247 subsidiary Ice Colo.

Baltic Data Center, a leader in data centre and information systems management in the Baltic States, will provide IT infrastructure lease, server hosting and system maintenance services to Sergel, one of the largest credit management and debt collection companies in Lithuania.

IT service provider Thomas Duryea Consulting is in discussions with national data centre operator NextDC as part of its plans for national expansion.

TD currently leases space in two unnamed Melbourne and Sydney-based data centres, and CEO Andrew Thomas has said the company plans to have a presence in data centres in every major city excluding Hobart in the next twelve months. He said the company would work with NextDC to be present in the operator's new data centres as they come online.

HP Enterprise Services has signed two five-year pacts with US Airways for applications management and data centre hosting services.

The agreements are renewals and HP “will continue to play a key part in synchronizing the business operations of US Airways around the airline’s flight-operating system maintenance,” an HP spokeswoman says.

Web hosting provider Windstream Hosted Solutions has announced that it has completed the expansion of its Raleigh data centre. This move follows Windstream's launch of its second-generation cloud platform.

Windstream Hosted Solutions added 10,000 sq ft and 4MW as part of its data centre expansion. The extra space will accommodate increasing customer demand for cloud-based services. This expansion is the third addition to the data centre in the last five years, Windstream says.

The international derivatives exchange Eurex has completed the re-location of its active matching engines into a new single data centre.

With this step, Eurex achieved a further milestone of its technology roadmap. The active Eurex trading and clearing infrastructure is now located in the International Business Exchange data centre of the international IT company Equinix, a global provider of data centre services. Eurex and Equinix have already been offering the co-location solution Proximity Services since 2006.

Digital Realty Trust, a global provider of data centre solutions, has completed the expansion to its existing 293,000 sq ft data centre facility at 2121 S. Price Road in Chandler, Arizona. The expansion, which began in the first quarter of 2011, has added approximately 226,000 rentable sq ft of data centre space and 13 megawatts of additional power to meet customer demand in the Phoenix market.

Zycron has been awarded a US$29 million contract with Nashville Electric Service to provide information technology outsourcing services. The four-year agreement began last week and includes IT applications and infrastructure support.

Nashville-based Zycron is now the primary vendor managing NES’ database and security administration, network support and help desk services.

Datacom has announced plans to build a new tier-3 data centre in Hamilton following the success of its bid to be a preferred supplier of cloud and data centre services to the New Zealand Government. The contract is for a period of 10 years with an optional 5 year extension. This initiative is part of a cross-Government ICT programme led by the Department of Internal Affairs to reduce costs and improve the effectiveness of government.

SIX Swiss Exchange will offer colocation services for its new equities trading platform X-stream INET together with Equinix, a provider of global data centre services. Connection to the new platform, scheduled for launch in the first half of 2012, will be provided in Equinix’s Zurich International Business Exchange data centre, and will offer market participants significantly enhanced trading capacity and reduced latency.

China Unicom has begun construction on a business centre in Chongqing, reports Xinhua News Agency.  The centre will be equipped with 20,000 cabinets and 180,000 servers that will facilitate the development of China Unicom's clouding computing business.

The company will invest four billion yuan in the centre, which will include an IDC data centre, outbound call center and a reception centre for VIP business, spanning a total area of 250 mu (one mu = 666.67 square meters).

Digital Realty Trust, a global provider of data centre solutions, has expanded its international relationship with IBM with the signing of a new Turn-Key Datacentre lease agreement in Digital Realty's 370,500-sq ft property at 29A International Business Park in Jurong East.

The Phoenix area is experiencing a rise in the construction of co-location centres, special data centres in which equipment space and Internet bandwidth are available for rent to retail customers, according to a report issued this month.

CE Colo, a leading data centre service provider in the Central and Eastern European region has during recent months expanded commercial floor space in its Prague data centre (previously, Sitel Data Center) by 700 m2.

More than one-third of this new area has already been sold and installed with live customers. Long-time client T-Mobile, for example, has increased its leased floor space by 40%. The CE Colo data centre company now offers a total of 3000 m2 of net customer floor space.

Demand for data backup and disaster recovery services has doubled this month, fuelled by flood-preparation measures at large companies. The Information and Communication Technology Ministry says flood-crisis preparedness and recovery strategies are being detailed for nationwide communications systems, including fixed-line and mobile phone service, data backup centres, servers and call centres. Data centre operators have been stocking oil for use in generators to provide service for up to five days if the power is cut off.

Following the story earlier this month that Facebook is set to build a data centre in Lulea, near the Arctic Circle in Northern Sweden, NCC Construction Sweden has announced it has secured an order from Facebook to construct the facility. The contract has been signed with Pinnacle Sweden AB. The total order value is approximately SEK 800 million, of which NCC’s share is worth approximately SEK 400 million.

Telx, an interconnection and data centre provider in strategic North American markets, has announced that it has entered a non-exclusive channel partnership agreement with Colocation America, a West Coast data centre operator.

Under the terms of the channel partnership agreement, Telx has engaged Colocation America as a Master Agent, allowing the company to offer its customers carrier-neutral connectivity choice and colocation in any of Telx’s carrier neutral data centres in eight key US cities.
