Top-level data centres rely on technology that can provide the highest availability possible: 99.999% uptime. A Tier IV data centre must have Class A continuous cooling technology and multiple, independent and dual-powered systems with sufficient redundant capacity. This doesn't sound like the greenest data centre. In fact, the Uptime Institute, which sets the criteria for data centres, doesn't specify any environmental requirements for Tier IV accreditation.

Aegis Data Store has announced the launch of a new £45 million data centre facility in Godalming. The facility offers bespoked enterprise class hosting employing the latest thinking on energy and carbon efficiency enabling 30% reductions in energy consumption over that of a conventional data centre. The Godalming facility has been developed on the site of a former metal finishing works, providing for an ample supply of power and an ideal transformation of a former industrial site into a world class data centre.

Reykjavík City Council has approved the applications of software company Greenstone for lots for a possible data centre in the city. The lots are located at Hádegismóar near the Morgunbladid newspaper printworks and by Lambhagavegur in the Grafarholt district.

Hurricane Electric's new energy-efficient data centre isn't much to look at. In fact, at first blush, it's tough to distinguish any appreciable differences between the newly opened facility, housed in an old Apple manufacturing plant in Fremont, Calif., and the company's first data centre a mile and half down the road - even though the latter was built some ten years ago.

Using direct current (DC) power in data centres has long been an option, but the jury is still out on whether the downsides are worth it. This year, the industry is studying whether a direct current power topology is more energy efficient than traditional alternating-current (AC) power, and if so, whether the potential risks and expenses associated with it can be mitigated enough to make DC a truly viable data centre power choice.

Mission West Properties and CDH Consulting have announced a new data centre property in Oregon that is now available for development.

Located in Ontario, Oregon, the site will support a single mission-critical data centre facility up to 300,000 sq ft, or can allow for three or four smaller data centre projects. The site features substantial economic development incentives and some of the lowest power costs in the country.

APW President Systems, has introduced a Proof of Concept Lab at Bangalore for running live demonstrations of Coolcentric's LiquiCool data centre solutions. The US-based Coolcentric (a division of Vette Corp), is a global provider of thermal management solutions. Last October, APW President - the pioneer in enclosure systems - had announced a partnership with Vette Corp. to distribute a range of advanced thermal management solutions in India.

Even before a shovel has struck the ground, a supercomputing facility that will be built west of town is making other companies look this way. Cheyenne is one of three finalists for a US$750 million data centre that would employ 100 - perhaps 150 - people, said Randy Bruns, president of Cheyenne LEADS. He said he doesn't know which company it is, except that it's a Fortune 50 financial firm.

Battery maker and building automation company Johnson Controls has teamed up with IBM to bake IT expertise into green building designs. When you integrate standard building operations (think fluorescent lighting, air conditioning and ventilation systems) with networks and sensors built by companies like IBM, a tremendous amount of new data becomes available — data yielding opportunities for conserving energy while increasing occupant comfort and overall efficiency.

An aerial video, captured from a helicopter, allegedly shows Apple's new data-centre located on 225 acres of land in Maiden, North Carolina. The enormous building is said to cover 500,000 sq ft of floor space, over four times the area available in the company's server farm in Newark, California. The project is said to have cost over US$1 billion.
