Data centre firm Sudlows has announced contract wins worth more than £2 million and a new relationship with BT that it believes will see greater investment in the sector in the North West. Manchester-based Sudlows has won a £1.5m deal to design and build a data centre for Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council. And a £600,000 deal to upgrade a centre for Co-operative Financial services, announced recently, is the latest in a series of projects for the Co-operative Group.

Jersey Telecom is investing about £8 million in creating new data centre capacity to meet growing demand. The company is constructing a new site at Rue des Prés in Jersey and expanding its First Tower Lane building in Guernsey. Six months ago a large part of the Guernsey centre was a dilapidated shed but it now holds scores of servers placed by businesses involved in e-gaming and finance.

Jersey Telecom managing director Tim Ringsdore said that the demand was so high for server hosting that JT now intended to build in the car park of the Guernsey site.

The Social Security Administration rejected two of the four recommendations from its own Office of Inspector General over site selection for a new data centre, according to a new report. SSA agreed with the IG's recommendations to continue “off-campus site selection” activities and to assess the effects of delays in the project, according to the Aug. 27 report. However, the SSA didn't agree with suggestions to revise the data centre program nor to revisit a recent study on the project.

A New Jersey company has an agreement to buy a Kings Mountain-area building for a US$30 million project to convert it into a highly secure server farm, according to sources familiar with the deal. Infocrossing, a unit of Wipro Ltd., plans to buy a former Chris-Craft boat factory in Cleveland County.

IBM says its data centre at Highbrook business park in Auckland will be one of the eleventh "greenest" out of more than 400 it operates around the world when it opens in March. Force10 Networks has unveiled its new Innovation Center, a 44,000 sq ft facility that houses its India headquarters, development lab and data centre in Olympia Technology Park.

Hurricane Electric, the world’s largest IPv6-native Internet backbone and a leading colocation provider, has announced the third build out of its 208,000 sq ft Fremont 2 data centre. This expansion project commenced earlier than originally planned due to high customer demand.

The 24,000 sq ft space will be identical to Hurricane Electric’s phase-two expansion, which opened last November and is expected to be at full capacity by the end of the year.

Equinix has announced that it has successfully completed the external audit for ISO 27001 certification for its International Business Exchange data centres in Germany. The ISO 27001 audit specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, operating, monitoring, reviewing, maintaining and improving a documented Information Security Management System, taking into account the organization’s overall business risks.

Search engine giant Google has started construction on its paper mill turned data centre in Finland. Google bought the Summa paper mill for around US$50 million last March, and will spend an estimated US$260 million before its completion early next year.

Yahoo is opening a data centre in upstate New York that uses a radical new design to reduce energy costs by 40%, the company has announced. The data centre in Lockport, near Niagara Falls, is cooled almost entirely by outside air that blows through the long data centre halls to keep server equipment cool. The IT gear will be run primarily by hydroelectric power from the local utility, New York Power Authority. Yahoo says it's the most eco-friendly data centre it has built.

Proposals to establish Ireland as a “global media hub” and a “data island” have been announced as the two winning ideas in “Your Country, Your Call” competition. The competition was initiated in February by Dr Martin McAleese, husband of President Mary McAleese, to find two ideas that would create prosperity and jobs for Ireland. The two proposals will now go into a development phase and each will be supported by an advisory group and a development fund of €500,000 each.

In the past, wholesale data centre provider Stream Data Centers has mostly acquired facilities in the states of Texas and California. However, this time around the company acquired a new data centre in different market altogether, the Denver suburb of Westminster, Colorado.

BT has announced its plans to invest US$12.5 billion over the next 19 months with 15 portfolio expansions, as part of its APAC expansion plans. With an addressable market of US$6.5 billion, and over 80% of its global business coming from the APAC region, the portfolio expansions will cater to Asian customer requirements of managed network services, CRM, unified communications, and managed security.

CSC – IT Center for Science Ltd. is to establish one of the world's most eco-efficient data centres in the Renforsin Ranta business park in Kajaani, on the site of the former paper mill of UPM in northern Finland. The data centre will be built jointly by CSC and UPM, and it will provide a state-of-the-art environment for supercomputers, data storage, and other demanding IT systems.
