Colt, Europe’s leading information delivery platform, has announced a new data centre deployment approach that provides customers with unparalleled flexibility in power density, size and Tier configurations. The new approach includes a range of Modular Data Centre design options which match users’ specific space, power and location needs.

The Fremont City Council could take action this week on a $1.6 million land deal for a proposed technology park. The city signed an option agreement in 2010 to buy the land. Media reports say the council will consider purchasing about 81 acres to develop the park.

Total land and infrastructure costs are estimated at US$2.7 million. The city wants to develop a park with power, water, sewer and telecommunications to attract data centres, high-tech industries and companies with intensive power needs.

At the Interop trade show this week, Dell will expand its networking, server and storage product lines to help users migrate from legacy data centres to those more heavily reliant on virtualisation.

The blade switch is the PowerConnect M8024-k. The switch allows users to provision multiple vNICs with a server, each with a different service level. The M8024-k supports up to 24 ports of 10 Gigabit Ethernet with backward compatibility to Gigabit Ethernet networks, Dell says.

A key player in the data centre industry has given the nod to higher data centre operating temperatures, making it possible to turn down -- or turn off -- power-hungry air conditioners.

The Atlanta construction company that built the US$1 billion Apple data centre in Catawba County is at work again on the western side of the Charlotte region.

Holder Construction is building T5@Kings Mountain II, a 150,000 sq ft data centre shell building in the Kings Mountain Data Center Park. Cost for the unfinished building is expected to total US$22.5 million.

TELUS has announced construction of a new $65 million Tier III Intelligent Internet Data Centre in Rimouski. This new green facility, the first TELUS Internet Data Centre built to LEED Gold Standards, will significantly enhance TELUS' IT management services to businesses in Quebec, Canada and internationally.

Dots are being connected to bring a new data processing centre to south-Barrie. City councillors have given initial approval to lift a holding provision on 505 Bayview Dr. This would allow landowner North American (Park Place) to sell the property so that a 109,000-sq ft building can be constructed for a data processing centre, complete with parking spaces and landscaping.

Technology companies IBM. and SAP are teaming up with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Lubar School of Business to establish a data centre that focuses on bringing more technologically trained business graduates into the workforce.

IBM is providing computer hardware, software and training for the center, officially known as "The Technology Innovation Datacenter - Powered by IBM," university officials said. The data centre features the high-performance IBM Power 750.

Global Switch has revealed it has almost completed the fit out of level 7 of its Sydney data centre. Project Manager Andrew Ball said that the fit out had been completed in stages with the "final handover" due in about March 2012.

When completed, Global Switch intends for level 7 to house four suites and a combined total of approximately 4,000 sq m of technical floor space. Level 7 was different to other floors in the flagship facility because it supported average floor densities per square that were between 10 and 15% higher than on lower floors.

Viettel's Internet Data Centre has opened its third data centre - the biggest and most modern one in Southeast Asia - in the southern province of Binh Duong. The Viettel IDC Song Than, 25km away from HCM City, has been built with a total investment of US$18 million on a land area of 3,500 sq m. The total space created by the five-floor building is 10,000 sqm, enough to accommodate 40,000 servers or 1,600 racks.

TDS, the Madison telecommunications company is to expand its Team Cos. data centre in Fitchburg, at 5515 Nobel Drive. The US$14 million project will triple the current 7,000 sq ft of space currently available for housing its customers’ data and computer equipment. About half of the new space will be put into use at the outset; the rest will be opened as business grows.

Belgacom will start in August the construction of a new 2,250 sq m data centre in Brussels. This will expand its current capacity of 15,000 sq m by 15% and help meet the growing demand for cloud and da¬ta centre services.

The data centre is expected to start operations in early 2013.

Colocation provider Data Foundry has announced that its Texas 1 data centre to be open in June is now fully powered by dual feeds from two separate substations in Texas. The 250,000 sq ft data centre marks the first facility in Data Foundry's 40-acre Data Ranch campus in Austin.
