Real estate developer Craig Harrison bought 640 acres at Niobrara Energy Park near Carr, last fall and is convinced that the convergence of power, fiberoptic and energy pipelines at the site allied the fact that “There's very massive capital heading its direction, in very remote locations, for mega data centres”, he is onto a winner. In recent weeks Harrison has heard from representatives of Mitsubishi, Siemens, General Electric and ABB, who are all interested in supplying parts to a data centre and energy park.

Telehouse, a leading provider of global data centres and managed ICT services, has released an additional floor with almost 1, 000 sq m of colocation space at Telehouse West, its state-of-the-art flagship data centre facility in London’s East India Dock adjacent to its existing sites.

Data centre and IT infrastructure specialist Sudlows has secured a contract with the Royal Bolton Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which is investing £500,000 to upgrade its network. Joseph Kremer, President, Public for Dell Asia Pacific and Japan region, recently announced that Dell plans to establish a global solution centre in Chengdu, the central city of Western China. Previously, Dell announced to set up a global solution centre in Shanghai, which is the first global solution centre that Dell has set up in the Asia-Pacific region. Chengdu will be the site of the company's second global solution centre in the Asia-Pacific region.

Interxion, a European provider of premium carrier-neutral colocation data centre services, has announced that it is building its seventh data centre (PAR7) in the Paris metropolitan area. The new facility is being built to meet the demands of customers who will benefit from Interxion's existing connectivity options of more than 70 carriers and the leading Internet exchange in France, France-IX. The first phase, providing over 4,500 sq m of equipped space, is expected to become operational in the second quarter of 2012.

Surrey County Council has saved £70m so far by using IT to revolutionise its processes and infrastructure since it was forced to implement cuts as a result of the government's spending review in October. The council has been tasked with saving £270m over the next four years as part of the spending review, and Paul Brocklehurst, head of IT at the local authority, has welcomed the challenge.

Campaigners vowed to fight on – after planners backed developments for a Huddersfield beauty spot. Councillors will decide next Thursday whether to allow hundreds of homes and an industrial site to be built at Lindley Moor. Campaigners still hope to block the developments on the green fields near the M62 – despite Kirklees Council officials saying both plans should go ahead. Miller Homes wants to build 294 houses at the corner of Cowrakes Road while Stirling Scotfield is seeking permission for a data centre at nearby Crosland Road.

Geo Networks’ fibre optic network has been chosen by the Convergence Group to link two of the company’s data centres with the BT Tower. The three-year will see video, web and voice traffic carried across Geo’s city sewer network

Geo said the fibre will provide an alternative to the current facility lines available into the BT Tower, eliminating the need to compress or decompress content for “a superior end-user experience”.

E-governance in Uttar Pradesh will soon get a shot in the arm, when the state data centre (SDC), being set up by Tata Consultancy Services starts functioning.

SDC, which was earlier expected to be up and running by June, has been delayed by two months. “Much work on SDC has been done and the remaining task is underway on war footing. We are confident it would be complete by August-end or early September,” UP Development Systems Corporation Ltd managing director Narendra Singh Kushwaha told Business Standard here.

Lincoln Public Schools administrators want a building across the street from Lincoln High School to house the district's new data centre, replacing the one destroyed in a May 30 fire. The data centre will house the servers, routers and other equipment that runs the district's 139 computer systems and powers its 12,000 computers.

Equinix, a provider of global data centre services, has announced the phase one opening of its third Sydney International Business Exchange data centre, known as SY3. Built at a cost of US$65 million, and located in south Sydney, SY3 provides 1,000 cabinet equivalents of capacity, expanding to 3,000 with subsequent phases. The new IBX significantly increases the company’s Sydney capacity and ability to meet high demand for premium colocation and interconnection data centre services.

Boston-based Caisson Data Center Services hopes to install a multimillion-dollar, 117,000 sq ft data centre at a vacant retail location on Route 9 in Natick, Massachusetts, directly across the street from the Natick Collection. The company has received permits to site the data centre on the eight-acre parcel, and is finalizing financing for the project.

Residents cheered last week as councillors threw out a proposal to build on fields in Huddersfield. Planners dramatically rejected the bid to construct nearly 300 homes on Lindley Moor after a stormy four-hour meeting.

But a second proposal to build a data centre on another part of the moor was passed by the slimmest of margins. Kirklees Council’s Huddersfield Planning Sub-committee backed a proposal to set up a data centre – a secure site for businesses to house their computer servers – on nearby Crosland Road.

Advanced Micro Devices is looking at the costs of software licensing and taxes as it aims to reduce the number of data centres worldwide, company officials said this week. AMD currently has six data centres and wants to reduce the number to three over the next few years as it looks for ways to cut costs and consolidate servers, said Tom Painter, corporate vice president for global infrastructure services at AMD which is headquaretered in Sunnyvale, California (pictured).

City Telecom has announced that its subsidiary, Hong Kong Media Production Company, has entered into an agreement for lease on a site at the Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate, to develop a world-leading, state-of-the-art multimedia production and distribution centre.

Amazon Web Services learned a lot of lessons from the outage that affected its Dublin data center, and will now work to improve power redundancy, load balancing and the way it communicates when something goes wrong with its cloud, the company said in a summary of the incident. The post mortem delved deeper into what caused the outage, which affected the availability of Amazon's EC2, EBS the RDS database and Amazon's network. The service disruption began Aug. 7, at 10:41 a.m., when Amazon's utility provider suffered a transformer failure.

CSC has unveiled a three-pronged strategy to push its cloud computing wares in Australia, with executives hopeful it can lure nascent player SAP. Aimed at enterprise and government, CSC will be able to tap into its existing base of clients such as Defence, Immigration, AMP and Westpac Group.
