A survey of 100 CIOs and data centre managers in the UK has shown that 53% of respondents do not know the environmental impact of their own data centres. The survey was conducted by researchers Vanson Bourne on behalf of data centre infrastructure management solutions provider nlyte Software.

Brocade has announced that CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research), one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research, has selected Brocade MLXe Core Routers as part of a network infrastructure upgrade to support its high throughput computing requirements and a data environment that exceeds 15 petabytes (15 million gigabytes) per year. According to the website, Whatsabyte.com, a single petabyte is equivalent to "20 million 4-door filing cabinets full of text."

A report from analyst TechMarketView reveals the cloud computing market will be worth £2.4 billion this year, with application provision worth an additional £3.4 billion. A breakdown of the costs of BT’s £542 million National Programme for IT in the NHS contract for parts of the South of England lays bare the telecom giant’s prices. Gartner has announced that Daimler AG is the winner of its first Green Data Centre Excellence Award in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region.

The firm was recognised for its "world-class" green IT initiatives within its data centres, beating off competition from fellow finalists Renault F1 and Hillingdon Council.

Interxion, a European provider of carrier-neutral colocation data centre services, has announced an agreement with CFN Services managed telecom platform company, who owns and operates the CFN Low Latency Global Financial Exchange Platform, to expand its platform at Interxion’s City of London Financial Hub.

Customers colocating at Interxion’s facilities will now be able to connect to a wide range of Global markets from a single location through CFN’s shared infrastructure.

Widespread adoption of cloud computing could give the top five EU economies a €763 billion boost over five years, a report has said. The CEBR said it could also create 2.4m jobs. The technology gives software and computing power on demand over the net.

Shares in construction support and property services specialist Mountfield Group rose in response to news it won a repair and maintenance contract from Cable & Wireless and that trading is picking up. The telecoms services provider has appointed Mountfield to repair the fabric of its estate of approximately 600 commercial buildings in the southern half of the UK.

CQG, the industry-leading order execution, charting, and analytics provider for global, electronically-traded securities, has announced that its spreader core servers are now located at Basildon, a state-of-the-art data centre thirty miles east of London, in direct proximity to the NYSE Liffe system.

The NYSE Liffe market itself migrated from Cannon Bridge to Basildon at the end of October and was ready at market open on November 1st. CQG quickly followed and is currently the only independent software vendor with a trading platform collocated at Basildon.

A green data centre has been launched in Iceland using all-renewable power, with servers in modules. The Thor data centre, which already houses servers for the Opera browser, is based in a 28,000 sq ft shed in Hafnarfjordur close Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital, which so far contains servers in one shipping cotainer and one “POD”, or prefabricated server room.

Colt, Europe’s leading information delivery platform, has announced that it will appoint Simon Walsh as Executive Vice President of its newly formed Colt Enterprise Services business.

Amazon says that the outage which made its UK, Italian, German and Spanish sites unavailable for about half an hour on Sunday night was due to a hardware failure, and not an attack by online activists angry at its stance on WikiLeaks.

"The brief interruption to our European retail sites earlier today was due to hardware failure in our European data centre network and not the result of a DDOS attempt," a spokeswoman for Amazon told Reuters. The different countries' sites are all served through systems there.

Veolia Water has confirmed that Indian outsourcing provider Tata Consultancy Services will manage and provide IT services to the firm.

The water company said that it had been reviewing its IT support services as part of an ongoing transformation programme, and it was speculated at the time that an outsourcing deal with TCS was under consideration. “Following a company-wide review of our IT provision, we will appoint an IT business partner to deliver the knowledge and expertise we require to meet our future IT needs,” said Buddy Willard, chief information officer at Veolia Water.

Wipro Technologies has announced the opening of a new development centre in Budapest, Hungary.

The Wipro centre was set up to primarily service the transformational program of Magyar Telekom, which will enable the latter to improve efficiency in customer experience and increase market agility. Earlier this year, Wipro had signed a multi-year transformational deal with Magyar Telekom (a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom), the largest telecom service provider in Hungary.

The global race for supercomputing power continues unabated: Germany's Bavarian Academy of Science has announced that it has contracted IBM to build a supercomputer that, when completed in 2012, will be able to execute up to 3 petaflops, potentially making it the world's most powerful supercomputer.

To be called SuperMUC, the computer, which will be run by the Academy's Leibniz Supercomputing Centre in Garching, Germany, will be available for European researchers to use to probe the frontiers of medicine, astrophysics and other scientific disciplines.

Technology firm ANS Group today posted a 38% rise in half-year profits and said its order book is at a record level. ANS Group, based at Manchester Science Parks, announced pre-tax profits of £680,000 for the six months to September 30, with revenues up 63% from £5.5 million to £8.98 million.

The company, which is listed on the PLUS market for smaller firms and provides and installs data centres, networks, servers and email systems for public sector bodies and private companies, announced an increase in its interim dividend from 1.25p to 1.5p.

Ucom Telecommunication Company has announced that it has opened headquarters in Yerevan, incorporating service centre, data centre, company administration and technical departments.

Utility company Centrica has chosen HP and Fujitsu to deliver desktop and data centre services while the previous supplier of these services, T-Systems, focuses on SAP services in the cloud and smart grid technology.

T-Systems previously had the desktop and data centre contracts. As a result of the change, about 120 employees will transfer form the company to Fujitsu, HP and Centrica. A source said HP is taking the data centre work while Fujitsu is to be awarded the desktop contract. The source said Centrica is insourcing more of the management of these two contracts.

European data centre operator DEAC has opened its first foreign representation office in the Russian capital, Moscow. The total number of projects in Russia has exceeded 200, and the opening of the office will lead DEAC to building even stronger links with its Russian customers and partners, as well as significantly strengthen its position in the Russian market.

Over the next 3 years DEAC plans to open the other representative offices in Europe and the CIS countries, as well as start-up new large data centres in Europe.

Telefonica will deploy a data centre in the Spanish city of Alcala de Henares. Telefonica plans to maintain only two data centres for its operations in Europe, local media report.

Telefonica aims to unify its nearly 100 data centres worldwide into six large facilities. Four will be located in Latin America and two in Europe. Telefonica plans to invest around €300 million in the deployment of its new data centre in Alcala. The facility will occupy a pace of nearly 80,000 sq m. The deployment will comprise two phases, the first of which is scheduled for completion in 2011.

The Department of Health has confirmed that it is to add two more years to its NHS National Network contract with BT. A spokesperson for the department said that a "letter of intent" to extend the current agreement has been issued. An official at the Cabinet Office has said that long-term IT contracts will not be cancelled early in favour of the G Cloud, while a freeze on IT projects has already made cost savings
