Liquid Computing, once one of Ottawa's most promising startups, has started winding up operations after falling victim to a financing crisis that is cutting a swath through technology companies. “We thought we were in position for a new round of funding but two of our three major investors were unable to contribute," Liquid chairman Adam Chowaniec said.
Investors had poured about US$50 million U.S. into developing the Liquid technology that combines hardware, software and operating systems to speed operations and cut costs of data centres by up to 80%.

According to the IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, factory revenue in the worldwide server market declined 3.9% year over year to US$13.0 billion in the fourth quarter of 2009 (4Q09). Although this was the sixth consecutive quarter with a year-over-year revenue decline, it was the second consecutive quarter with sequential quarter-over-quarter revenue growth. Worldwide server shipments increased 1.9% to 1.9 million units in 4Q09 when compared with the year-ago period.

Equinix, the data-centre operator, has hired four lenders to help it borrow US$170 million for expansion in Asia, according to sources. DBS Group Holdings, General Electric Capital, ING Groep and Royal Bank of Scotland Group will help Foster City, California-based Equinix get a five-year loan, said the sources, who asked not to be named as the plan is private.

Data centre staff costs are expected to rise by 10% in large businesses, according to a study from analyst IDC. The IDC survey of 300 large European businesses found that one in four organisations were managing their servers and storage manually, leading to much higher costs compared with organisations that used some tools.

Revenue in the fourth quarter of 2009 was US$94.3 million, an increase of 5%, compared to the fourth quarter of 2008. Global IT spending will rise in 2010 but the majority of IT budgets will remain flat, according to Ovum. The analysts said that some chief information officers will see increases in budgets of between one and five per cent, but these figures did not represent a recovery, just an improvement on the bare minimum.
"Realistically, the numbers are more likely to reflect the effect of previously deep budget cuts during 2008 and the first half of 2009, which left many IT departments operating at 'bare-bones' capacity," said Ovum's Rhonda Ascierto.
British IT firm Computacenter posted a better-than-expected 26% rise in pre-tax profit for 2009, reflecting a stronger focus on higher-margin IT services, and said it expected steady growth in 2010.
The company, which has gained WM Morrison and Severn Trent as customers, reported adjusted pretax profit of £54.2 million on revenue of £2.5 billion, 2.2% lower than in 2008. The South African Post Office is awaiting ministerial approval to issue tenders worth a total of R250 million to begin the second phase of its IT upgrade plan, said group CFO Nick Buick.
The state Senate has approved a temporary tax exemption for companies that want to build server farms in Washington. The measure now heads to the House for further consideration. The measure grants a sales and use tax exemption for eligible server equipment and power infrastructure at eligible computer data centres.
The centres must be located in a rural county, have at least 20,000 sq ft dedicated to housing servers. They also must have started construction between April 1, 2010 and July 1, 2011. The exemption ends on April 1, 2018.

PEER 1 Network Enterprises has announced it has acquired Atlanta based VIA Net.Works USA, a privately held subsidiary of Clara.Net Holdings, in an all-cash transaction. Financial terms were not disclosed.

UnitedHealth Group plans to break ground this summer on a US$100 million to US$150 million data centre in Chaska, similar to the one it built in Elk River in 2008. The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) has owned up to increasing its IT development budget by almost a third over the course of a year. The department admitted in a written answer to parliament that it had spent £99 million more on information technology advancement in 2008-09 than in the previous financial year.

VISI, the Eden Prairie-based managed hosting and cloud infrastructure provider, has been acquired by a Chicago-based public corporation for US$17.8 million. Telephone and Data Systems acquired VISI through its Wisconsin subsidiary TDS Telecommunications Corp. It was an all-cash transaction, said VISI CEO Mike Sowada.

Natural gas distributor AGL Resources has said that it has made a deal to sell its AGL Networks telecommunications fibre-optics business to Zayo Group. The price was not disclosed. The Atlanta-based networks unit builds, owns, and runs fibre optic networks for customers in Atlanta, Phoenix, and Charlotte, North Carolina.
