Capgemini has placed a bet on Latin America, announcing a deal to buy a majority stake in CPM Braxis, Brazil’s largest information technology services group.
Europe’s largest IT services company is paying €233million for a 55% stake in Brazil’s CPM Braxis, a regional market leader. CPM Braxis has an enterprise value of about €437million. The deal will give Capgemini a platform to grow further in Brazil, where it will be looking to compete with rivals in the region such as Accenture, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Unisys.
Jersey Telecom is investing about £8 million in creating new data centre capacity to meet growing demand. The company is constructing a new site at Rue des Prés in Jersey and expanding its First Tower Lane building in Guernsey. Six months ago a large part of the Guernsey centre was a dilapidated shed but it now holds scores of servers placed by businesses involved in e-gaming and finance.
Jersey Telecom managing director Tim Ringsdore said that the demand was so high for server hosting that JT now intended to build in the car park of the Guernsey site.

Hewlett-Packard has scored a victory in the multi-billion dollar bidding war for data storage company 3PAR, after Dell said it was pulling out of the race. Dell, which had secured the backing of 3PAR's board for a deal less than three weeks ago, said that it had taken "a measured approach throughout the process and had decided to end these discussions". 3PAR will have to pay Dell a $72m break fee after the computer manufacturer ended its participation in the bidding process.

BT's dominance of health service IT has been revealed by government figures showing the firm received more than two-fifths of NHS Connecting for Health's 2009-2010 £1.1 billion supplier budgets. IT giant IBM has revealed that it plans to spend US$1 billion on data centre facilities around the globe in order to support IT services delivery to emerging markets.
The money will go towards building new data centres and expanding existing facilities. This will help IBM to access emerging markets such as Egypt, Argentina and China, the company said, which it hopes will contribute a quarter of its revenues by 2015.

European organisations are losing more than £500,000 per year because of the poor performance of cloud-based apps. According to a survey of 300 IT directors across Europe by Compuware, 57% of businesses are slowing or shutting down cloud applications, such as e-commerce sites, due to performance management issues. Corporate Office Properties Trust has announced the acquisition of a 233,000 sq ft data centre known as Power Loft @ Innovation in Manassas, Virginia and the acquisition of the assets of Power Loft LLC, relating to the data centre, for approximately US$115 million.
Prior to the acquisition, Power Loft LLC, founded by James F. Coakley, was the operating company providing development management, property management and leasing services to the data centre.
McAfee has immediate plans to build points of presence in Australia to provide its web security services to local customers, McAfee executives have said. Michael Sentonas, chief technology officer for McAfee Asia Pacific, said McAfee was building "points of presence" in Australia to serve cloud-based email and web filtering services.
"We are going to progress in building that capability and we are going to offer it through our typical channels," Sentonas said.

Montagu Private Equity is to acquire web services company host Europe Group from AIM-listed firm Oakley Capital. Montagu is to pay £222 million for the company, which provides hosting and domain services to small and medium-sized enterprises in the UK and Germany.
Westminster City Council aims to cut its IT budget by a further 20% by moving to the cloud and consolidating its network suppliers. The local authority’s CIO David Wilde, said that he has already reduced the IT budget by 20% so far. "I’ve taken 20 % of the cost of IT out to date, in two years. By the time I’ve finished, I’ll have taken another 20% off. It equals to savings of £3.2 million - £1.8 million last year and £1.4 million this year."
Paetec Holding, a Fortune 1000 telecommunications company, has unveiled a new data centre in Houston. The company said initially, the centre will take up more than 2,200 sq ft of Paetec’s central office space on North Freeway in Houston.

US IT wholesale distributor Ingram Micro has agreed to buy Belgian technology firm InterAct, a specialist in data centre solutions, no financial details were reported.
After the acquisition, Rudi Lenaerts, CEO of InterAct, will lead Ingram Micro BeLux's value division. Ingram Micro BeLux has 200 workers and its revenue amounted to €500 million last year.

Yahoo is opening a data centre in upstate New York that uses a radical new design to reduce energy costs by 40%, the company has announced. The data centre in Lockport, near Niagara Falls, is cooled almost entirely by outside air that blows through the long data centre halls to keep server equipment cool. The IT gear will be run primarily by hydroelectric power from the local utility, New York Power Authority. Yahoo says it's the most eco-friendly data centre it has built.

NTT Communications has announced that its subsidiary NTT Communications (Thailand) Co. will be opening a branch office in Ayutthaya, Thailand. Colocation and dedicated server provider Global Net Access has announced that it has upgraded the electrical infrastructure at its Atlanta, Georgia data centre, known as AtlantaNAP, to meet the specifications for Tier 4 classification. According to GNAX, the upgrade will enable the AtlantaNAP facility to provide colocation, dedicated server, managed hosting and cloud services customers with 100% uptime service level agreements.
SoftLayer Technologies, the innovative on-demand data centre services provider, has launched its second Dallas data centre, located in the company’s recently completed headquarters. Designated DAL05, the new facility features an advanced dual-path network structure, including redundant network interface cards (NICs) in every server. Customers can select up to 2G of connectivity for any DAL05 server, select servers with up to 10G, and configure their networking resources to achieve all new levels of efficiency.

Orissa is among the five states in the country where the implementation of the State Data Centre, a project being taken up under the centrally sponsored National e-Governance Plan is in advanced stages of implementation. The SDC project is expected to be fully implemented in Orissa by the end of October this year, according to a report of the Department of Information Technology of the Government of India.

Russian mobile operator Megafon plans to launch a network of data centres. A data centre will be built in each macro-region across the country within two to three years, according to the operator's first deputy CEO, Valery Ermakov.

The bill makes law actions mandated by the order, such as a plan to consolidate data centre space by 50% by July 2011 and to cut energy usage from IT operations 20% by July 2011 and 30% by July 2012.

In an interview with Computerworld UK, Alan Hartwell, Oracle’s vice-president of technology solutions and channels in the UK, said that most organisations are looking at where their cost centres are during the downturn. And for the first time, they are looking at cutting costs in the data centre.
