A Derby IT firm, which last year was named the fastest growing technology company in the Midlands, has announced plans to expand further in 2011. Internet hosting company Node4 was established in 2004. Since then, the business has grown rapidly and today employs 39 people, mostly in technical roles, and has more than 600 clients. The company has data centres in Derby and Wakefield. To cope with its growing number of clients, Node4 is planning to open another data centre in Northampton in the New Year.
Brunei can potentially become an international hub for data centres due to its geographical and political advantages, said DST top executive. "Brunei is very well-positioned to develop data centres due to its highly stable political climate and good infrastructure and that the country is safe from a natural disaster perspective," said Idris Vasi, CEO of DST Group, in a just-released report on the Sultanate published by the Oxford Business Group.

Japanese IT services firm NTT DATA has acquired Keane, a US-based IT services firm. Following the acquisition, Keane International and its subsidiaries will remain outstanding as separate legal entities, said NTT DATA. This transaction is expected to enable NTT DATA to provide fully integrated IT services in the US, in addition to the global SAP service capabilities it has built to date.
In addition, NTT DATA plans to further strengthen its support of the group customers through coordination and cooperation between Keane International and the NTT DATA global group companies.

According to the latest outlook by IT research and advisory firm Gartner global IT spending is forecast to a total of US$3.6 trillion in 2011, a 5.1% increase from the previous calendar year.
In 2010, worldwide IT spending amounted to US$3.4 trillion, a 5.4% increase from 2009. Gartner has raised its outlook for 2011 global IT spending from its previous forecast of 3.5% growth. In 2010, the IT industry performed better than Gartner's previous forecast of 3.2% growth.

Software firm iGate is buying a majority stake in India's Patni Computer Systems for US$1.2 billion, helping it to take on bigger rivals in the country's export-driven IT services industry.
U.S.-listed iGate, backed by private equity firm Apax Partners, said it agreed to pay 503.50 rupees a share for a 63% stake in Patni, valuing the deal at US$921 million. It will buy an additional 20.6% stake through an open offer to Patni minority shareholders for US$301 million.
IT firm Computacenter said full-year profit would be at the top end of market expectations thanks to continued growth in IT services and its customers resuming spending on IT infrastructure. The company, which counts Morrisons Supermarkets and Lloyds Banking Group as customers, said on Tuesday it was also benefiting from cost cuts made in 2009, when the businesses slashed IT upgrades in response to the economic downturn.

A real estate firm has purchased the Northern Trust building in Chicago, and plans to spend US$200 million to convert it into a data centre. The former check processing plant in Chicago’s south loop was purchased by the Red Sea Group late last month for US$35 million from Northern Trust. Last November the Red Sea Group launched Server Farm Realty with projects in Washington state and Santa Clara, CA.
Interxion Holding, a European provider of colocation data centre services, has announced that it has commenced an initial public offering of 18,550,000 ordinary shares. Interxion is offering 16,250,000 ordinary shares and certain selling shareholders are offering 2,300,000 ordinary shares. The estimated price range for the initial public offering is US$11.00 to US$13.00 per ordinary share.
Interxion has applied to have the ordinary shares approved for listing on The New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "INXN."

US computer chip giant Intel posted its best earnings ever in 2010 as businesses beefed up data centres to handle services increasingly shifting to the Internet "cloud." Intel said it took in a net profit of US$11.7 billion for the year on revenue of US$43.6 billion, a 167% jump from the profit it posted in 2009.
"2010 was the best year in Intel's history," the California-based company's chief executive Paul Otellini said in comments released with the earnings report. "We believe that 2011 will be even better."
Verizon Communications is interested in a 160-acre parcel of land 1 mile north of Laramie for the possible location of a mega data centre that could create up to 200 jobs, a company spokeswoman has said. Verizon spokeswoman Lynn Staggs said her company is in the process of acquiring a two-year option on the parcel, which is owned by Lodgepole Ranch LLC and has access from North 30th Street and from the west along Asphalt Lane.

Intel Corporation has reported full year revenue of US$43.6 billion, up US$8.5 billion year-on-year. This represents a 24% increase in profits. In its fourth-quarter results, Intel posted revenue of US$11.5 billion. Operating income during this quarter was US$4.3 billion, with a net income of US$3.4 billion.
In the fourth quarter 2010 PC Client Group revenue was flat, while Data Center Group revenue was up 15%, other Intel architecture group was also flat, and Intel Atom microprocessor and chipset revenue of US$391 million flat, all sequentially.
Virtualization infrastructure services provider Virtustream has raised US$49.4 million in funding, according to an SEC filing. Virtustream delivers infrastructure services to enterprise customers, leveraging its xStream platform to deliver elastic compute resources at consumption-based pricing.

Tariffs on Internet access services in Russian regions could be reduced by building more data centres across the country, Communications and Mass Media Minister Igor Shchyogolev has said. “One of the solutions could be to build large data centres at least in the centres of the federal districts and to mirror key resources there so that (Internet) traffic goes via the shortest route,” Shchyogolev said, adding that this is likely to result in cheaper Internet access services and higher data transfer speeds.

Tata Consultancy Services, India’s largest software exporter, reported third-quarter profit that beat analysts’ estimates after customers outsourced more information-technology contracts.

Hewlett-Packard has received approval to build a multimillion-dollar data centre in western Sydney. HP was awaiting planning approval for its A$100 million-plus facility to be housed on 134,000 sq m of land in Eastern Creek, NSW.

Australia's Department of Human Services plans to consolidate its seven data centres down to two in an effort to reel in operating costs and modernise its systems. Shetland is to experience an IT revolution later this year work on laying a superfast cable connecting the isles to the rest of the world got under way on Wednesday. Digital Realty Trust, a global wholesale data centre provider, is expanding its data centre facility at 2121 S. Price Road in Chandler, Arizona, adding approximately 226,000 rentable sq ft data centre space and 13 megawatts of power to meet customer demand in the Phoenix market. The existing facility totals over 293,000 sq ft and was 97% occupied as of September 30, 2010. When construction is complete, the expanded facility is expected to feature more than 31 megawatts of total power.
Canadian communications giant Bell says it’s constructing a new secure data centre in Ottawa after signing long-term co-location contracts with three unnamed customers, totalling almost C$100 million.
The 82,000 sq ft building is scheduled to be completed in late 2012. Citing security concerns, a company spokesperson declined to divulge its location. Bell says the new building will be a tier-3 facility, meaning it has utility backups as well as less downtime and greater security than a simple server room or data centre, according to industry background documents.
Data centre management solutions provider Raritan has announced that private equity firm NewSpring Capital has invested in the company. Although the company did not disclose the exact amount of the investment, NewSpring says it will hold a minority stake in Raritan.

Portuguese IT services provider Decsis and the local unit of US Hewlett-Packard Company will invest €2 million (US$2.7 million) in a data centre in Evora, southern Portugal. The construction works on the facility are expected to be completed in April, the municipality of Evora said.

MTN, a telecommunications provider in Ghana has established a data centre in Ghana to boost the quality of voice and data services it is proving to its subscribers in the country. The facility, estimated at US$250 million, is the first of its kind in Ghana’s telecommunications industry and the third in MTN Group after South Africa and Iran.

A consultant has found that the new Washington State Data Center being built in Olympia is much larger than what the state requires for its future computer needs and that some excess space could be leased to businesses. Web hosting provider PEER 1 Hosting has announced that it had begun building out a 50,000 sq ft green data centre in Portsmouth, UK. The Belgian KBC Group is set to open a twin data centre near Budapest in a bid to cut costs in Central Europe, said K&H, the Hungarian unit of KBC.

Jefferson County industrial officials say a company wants to set up a US$20 million data centre in Jefferson Metropolitan Park Lakeshore. Colocation provider Telehouse America has unveiled its growth plans. Verizon Communications took its cloud computing momentum one step further by, agreeing to acquire cloud computing Infrastructure-as-a-Service provider Terremark Worldwide for a whopping US$1.4 billion. Under the terms of the deal, Miami-based Terremark will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of New York-based Verizon and keep the Terremark name, Verizon said. Interxion, a Netherlands data centre company, priced shares in its initial public offering at the top of the expected range on Thursday, according to an underwriter. Interxion sold 20.4 million shares at US$13 each, raising about US$264.9 million, an underwriter said.
