Verizon Communications swung to a bigger-than-expected second-quarter profit, led by growth in its wireless business. "In terms of earnings growth and the acceleration of revenue growth, this has been one of Verizon's best quarters since the 2008 economic downturn," said Chairman and Chief Executive Ivan Seidenberg. The Australian Department of Defence has selected US-based IP services provider, Verizon, for a US$50 million five-year internet gateway contract to improve secure internet services to its 110,000 employees, as well as agencies and the public.
The contract was first penned in April following the department’s decision to upgrade its communications offerings. Under the agreement, Verizon will provide managed services for the secure internet connection with each gateway housed in separate data centres located in countries such as the United States, Sweden and Singapore.
Mobile operator Vodacom has opened a new seven-storey, energy-efficient data centre on the Cape Town foreshore. The group said that scalability of the data centre was a key design feature, with the data floor area being able to expand from an initial 1,552 sq m to an ultimate 2,862 sq m.

Dutch telecom operator Royal KPN has posted an 11% decline in net profit on continued weakness in its home market, but maintained its full-year guidance. KPN is struggling with falling revenue as consumers in its Dutch home market increasingly substitute text messages or voice calls with instant messaging or voice over internet protocol services such as Skype or Whatsapp. Dutch mobile service revenue fell 8.7% in the second quarter, compared with a 8.1% drop in the first quarter, but Chief Executive Eelco Blok nonetheless said the trend was "continuing but not worsening."

Stream Data Centers has announced that it has completed the sale of its San Antonio Ready-to-Fit Data Center to a Fortune 100 Corporation. The 150,000 sq ft facility is located on 33 acres in Westover Hills in San Antonio, Texas. The purchasing company conducted a national search and considered multiple locations in the Southwest U.S. before ultimately selecting Stream's RTF Data Center in San Antonio. Terms of the transaction are not being disclosed.

Independent data centre operator Teraco is expanding its facilities in Johannesburg and Cape Town and building a new centre in Durban as demand in the SA market explodes. But it’s having to focus enormous energy on increasing power efficiencies at all the sites in order to try to combat the effects of fast-rising electricity tariffs. Teraco MD Lex van Wyk says companies have been hard hit by the latest electricity increases and “this will only worsen”. “We’re taking every step in managing our facilities better so that our clients are not affected as seriously as they could be,” he says.
Internap Network Services, a provider of IT Infrastructure services, today announced financial results for the second quarter of 2011. Revenue totalled US$60.4 million compared with $60.5 million in the second quarter of 2010 and US$59.4 million in the first quarter of 2011. Revenue from Data centre services increased year-over-year and sequentially. IP services decreased compared with the second quarter of 2010 and increased sequentially.
Ramsey Dellinger, CEO of Business Continuity Solutions has announced Q.2 2011 revenue results that more than double Q.1 results. BT Global Services has reported a 5% reduction in revenues for the first quarter to 30 June, despite increases in order intake. The telecommunication company’s professional services business reported revenues of £1.9 billion in the period, down from £2 billion the same time last year. However, BT Global Services managed to continue to reduce its operating loss, by 31 percent, from £54 million in Q1 2010 to £37 million this year.
Data centre operator Digital Realty Trust has announced in its latest quarterly earnings report that it will be expanding its data centre space in London, UK with a US$21 million data centre. Though Digital Realty Trust did not disclose the exact location of the acquired data centre, it did say that the facility is 130,000 sq ft, features 8 MW of power capacity and can support the development of five 1.44 MW data centre PODs.
