Wojewodztwa Lodzkiego, or the Lodz Region in Poland, has issued a tender for computer equipment and supplies, according to The Construction Index. The scope of the contract includes computer equipment and supplies, portable computers, networks, servers, installation services of computers and information processing equipment, IT services including consulting, software development, internet and support.

The report said that the last date for submitting the bid entries for the contract to procure computer equipment and supplies is August 28, 2011.

Data centre provider Telecity is in early-stage talks to buy an Irish rival as it seeks to expand its capacity. A deal for Dublin-based Data Electronics, which operates two data centres in the Irish capital, could set Telecity back around £100 million. Talks are understood to be at a very preliminary stage, with no guarantee a bid will be forthcoming. A spokesman for Telecity declined to comment on rumour and speculation.

AMD has announced its participation with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), HP and Clarkson University in a significant research project that looks at the industry-wide challenge of channelling renewable energy directly to data centres.

Stealthy data centre start-up Plexxi has landed another US$20 million in funding as it continues development of a network fabric to tie together applications, compute and storage. Plexxi's investors in its Series B round include Lightspeed Venture Partners, which led the round, as well as Series A investors Matrix Partners and North Bridge Venture Partners. The US$20 million brings Plexxi's total funding to US$28 million.

NEXTDC has raised another A$50 million capital through a fully underwritten institutional placement of $40 million and a conditional placement of A$20 million. The company proposes to apply the new funds to the fit out and other costs for its Melbourne (A$32 million) and Canberra (A$15 million) facilities. The remaining A$3 million will go towards the offer costs and to provide extra working capital.

Midwest colocation provider Lifeline Data Centers has finalised a 25 year lease with the Indianapolis Department of Public Safety for 76,000 sq ft of secure office space. Lifeline's Eastgate campus, a 41 acre former shopping mall on the East side of Indianapolis, will house the Regional Emergency Operations Center and Regional Department of Homeland Security offices. Capgemini has completed the acquisition of French internet and telecoms services company Prosodie for €382 million, following the authorisation of the French competition authorities.

Prosodie offers business-to-business client transactions and is managed by private-equity fund Apax Partners. The transaction will enable Capgemini to foray into the high-value-added front office transaction solutions market. Prosodie will form part of Capgemini's New Business Model (NBM) service line, which aims to develop services based on proprietary solutions invoiced on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Windstream has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire PAETEC Holding based in Fairport, New York, in a transaction valued at around US$2.3 billion. The transaction is expected to be accretive to free cash flow per share, excluding merger and integration costs, in the first year following the closing.

UK businesses are wasting about £30.8 million a day by leaving their PC equipment on standby, according to new research from energy company E.ON – which, depressingly, establishes that nothing has changed in five years despite the huge amount of advice and support available.

Data centre and IT infrastructure specialist Sudlows has secured a contract with the Royal Bolton Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which is investing £500,000 to upgrade its network. euNetworks has announced strong second quarter results, with significant sales and revenue growth. In addition, the Group completed the acquisition of LambdaNet Deutschland Communications on 31 May 2011. The results announced include one month of LambdaNet financials.

Deltek, a global provider of enterprise software and information solutions, has released a new research report that provides a five- year forecast of federal government IT spending. Interxion, a European provider of premium carrier-neutral colocation data centre services, has announced that it is building its seventh data centre (PAR7) in the Paris metropolitan area. The new facility is being built to meet the demands of customers who will benefit from Interxion's existing connectivity options of more than 70 carriers and the leading Internet exchange in France, France-IX. The first phase, providing over 4,500 sq m of equipped space, is expected to become operational in the second quarter of 2012.

Level 3 Communications and Global Crossing Limited have announced that, at separate special meetings, stockholders of both companies voted to approve Level 3's proposed acquisition of Global Crossing. At the Global Crossing shareholders' meeting, 99.8 percent of the Global Crossing shares voting at the meeting were voted in favor of the adoption of the agreement between Global Crossing and Level 3.

Surrey County Council has saved £70m so far by using IT to revolutionise its processes and infrastructure since it was forced to implement cuts as a result of the government's spending review in October. The council has been tasked with saving £270m over the next four years as part of the spending review, and Paul Brocklehurst, head of IT at the local authority, has welcomed the challenge.

Cincinnati Bell has announced that it plans to build a one-million square foot data centre in Phoenix that is also expected to support growth in data centre services in California. Cincinnati Bell’s  data centre and colocation arm , CyrusOne - has purchased a 40-acre site and plans to begin construction in 2012 and begin delivering service by the first quarter of 2013. The project also will include a 110 megawatt substation to be constructed on the site.

AboveNet, a provider of high bandwidth connectivity solutions, announced results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2011.

Campaigners vowed to fight on – after planners backed developments for a Huddersfield beauty spot. Councillors will decide next Thursday whether to allow hundreds of homes and an industrial site to be built at Lindley Moor. Campaigners still hope to block the developments on the green fields near the M62 – despite Kirklees Council officials saying both plans should go ahead. Miller Homes wants to build 294 houses at the corner of Cowrakes Road while Stirling Scotfield is seeking permission for a data centre at nearby Crosland Road.

TELUS has reported second quarter 2011 revenue of $2.55 billion, an increase of 6.4% over the same period last year. This increase was generated by nearly 10% t growth in wireless revenue and three per cent growth in wireline revenue, both driven by strong data growth.

Government information technology contractor CACI International said that it received one of 15 contracts to supply the Department of Veterans Affairs with information technology services.

 Under the five-year, indefinite quantity contract, CACI will help the VA and its employees provide veterans with the means to quickly get their specific healthcare needs met expedite services and speed the processing of claims, the company said.

PAETEC has announced second quarter 2011 operating results. Financial results for second quarter 2011 included the following:  Revenue of US$507.1 million; Adjusted EBITDA of US$98.6 million; Net loss of US$9.4 million and  34th consecutive quarter of positive free cash flow, which increased to US$45.7 million.

Lincoln Public Schools administrators want a building across the street from Lincoln High School to house the district's new data centre, replacing the one destroyed in a May 30 fire. The data centre will house the servers, routers and other equipment that runs the district's 139 computer systems and powers its 12,000 computers.

Global 1 Resources, a provider of server racks, announced the completion of its deal with Opus-3 to offer over 300 universal server racks for the new 9,000 sq ft data centre. Besides the universal server racks, Global 1 Resources will also be providing two-compartment colocation server racks. Leveraging the colocation racks, Opus-3 will have dedicated management and hosting, along with colocation hosting capabilities.

Opus-3 is planning to expand the property to over 36,000 square feet. The property for the data centre was formerly leased to AudioNet/Broadcast.com/Yahoo!

One hundred and forty workers at Lloyds Banking Group in Halifax have learnt that they had lost their jobs.  The staff are among 1,300 cut nationally. The cut affects staff working in group functions, retail and operations at Trinity Road, Halifax, and the Copley Data Centre.

The bank employs around 6,000 in Halifax and the majority of staff live locally. The bank has reiterated its commitment to Halifax which it has said would remain a major centre.

Boston-based Caisson Data Center Services hopes to install a multimillion-dollar, 117,000 sq ft data centre at a vacant retail location on Route 9 in Natick, Massachusetts, directly across the street from the Natick Collection. The company has received permits to site the data centre on the eight-acre parcel, and is finalizing financing for the project.

Austin's first big wave of public data centre expansions stopped shortly after the dot-com boom fizzled in 2000. A high-profile Silicon Valley company called Exodus Communications had built two of the giant data storage facilities in Northeast Austin in the final year of the boom, 1999. By 2002, Exodus was bankrupt, and a few years after that, its Austin data centres were bought at bargain prices by Dell and Home Depot.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra envisions building internet data centres nationwide to accommodate emerging smart card technology, says a Pheu Thai policymaker. Industry analysts agree the premier is likely to pay more attention to national information and communication technology policy because of her experience in the telecom field.

Residents cheered last week as councillors threw out a proposal to build on fields in Huddersfield. Planners dramatically rejected the bid to construct nearly 300 homes on Lindley Moor after a stormy four-hour meeting.

But a second proposal to build a data centre on another part of the moor was passed by the slimmest of margins. Kirklees Council’s Huddersfield Planning Sub-committee backed a proposal to set up a data centre – a secure site for businesses to house their computer servers – on nearby Crosland Road.

Advanced Micro Devices is looking at the costs of software licensing and taxes as it aims to reduce the number of data centres worldwide, company officials said this week. AMD currently has six data centres and wants to reduce the number to three over the next few years as it looks for ways to cut costs and consolidate servers, said Tom Painter, corporate vice president for global infrastructure services at AMD which is headquaretered in Sunnyvale, California (pictured).

New Zealand has the chance to boost its economic growth by becoming the data-storage hub of the Pacific, says the company planning the country's second international internet link. Software tycoon Richard Beaton is back on the investment trail and has taken a 20% stake in a fast-growing data centre and internet hosting business. Dell’s investment in differentiated enterprise solutions and services continued to drive substantial gains in the company’s profitability in the fiscal second quarter as operating income rose significantly on a 1 percent revenue increase.

Listed tech firm, IPVG has said its net income reached P296 million in the first half, much higher than its P10.8-million net income last year. Dell will seek to use its forthcoming Australian data centre — expected to launch within the next 12 months - to create new Cloud and hosting services for its local customers, according to the company’s A/NZ chief, Joe Kremer. European Internet Infrastructure Service Provider, Mesh and Global ICT solution provider, NTT Europe have announced a new partnership: NTT will supply hosting and network infrastructure to Mesh as they expand their presence around the globe.

Digital Realty Trust, a global provider of data centre solutions, has announced that it has acquired a redevelopment site in Chessington, England, approximately 17 miles southwest of central London and eight miles inside the M25. The purchase price was £12.9 million. The building totals approximately 130,000 sq ft and is capable of supporting five 1440kW Turn-Key Datacentre PODs, with total IT capacity of 8MW.

IT outsourcer and network security provider ASG Group said its net profit grew 28% in FY11 to A$15.7 million. The company attributed this, as well as its 27% growth in revenue to A$153.3 million, partly to strong organic growth. Ebitda margins also improved to 18.4%, from 17.9% a year earlier, due to contributions from recent acquisitions, which include Melbourne IT firm Dowling Consulting.

A £66 million IT improvement programme at the Highland Council run by IT services giant Fujitsu has been beset by glitches, leaving many users with unworkable IT systems. The project is supposed to deliver new desktops and laptops to schools and council workers by the end of November 2011, along with a new telephone system and an updated data centre. However, scores of school workers, returning after the summer break, have reported problems logging in, accessing printers and obtaining data.

Immedion, a South Carolina-based dedicated data centre and managed services provider is building its third data centre in Charleston, SC with plans to open in late spring. The third site further expands Immedion’s data centre redundancy and disaster recovery offerings and allows Immedion to better serve the managed hosting needs of the southeast region. “Locating our third data centre in Charleston will better enable us to meet the growing tech needs of the coastal region” comments Immedion CEO, Frank Mobley.

Austrian systems integrator and ICT services provider Kapsch BusinessCom - headquarterd in Vienna (pictured) - has won two major outsourcing contracts. Firstly, the company has recently begun implementing new ICT infrastructure at a total of nine ELIN – the building project and municipal infrastructure company - locations throughout Austria.

India's largest IT services firm Tata Consultancy Services has said iON - its integrated information technology solution for small and medium business (SMB) - targets a revenue of US$1 billion in the next five years. iON provides on-demand business solutions using cloud computing technology.

The largest electricity distributor in Victoria Powercor-CitiPower has signed a new five year, A$25 million contract with CSC – which will maen the two companies relationship will stretch to 17 years. This follows on from its last A$17.8 million five year deal  signed in 2006.

Huawei, a global information and communications technology solutions provider, has released its financial results for the first half of 2011. Sales revenue grew 11%  year-over-year to CNY 98.3 billion and operating profit reached CNY 12.4 billion.

Telus has paid the Kamloops-Thompson School District C$7million to purchase land on the city’s South Shore in order to build a new data centre. The deal is a win for all involved, with the 11.5-acre property on McGill Road. Dan Sulz, executive director of Venture Kamloops, said the site is an ideal location for the state-of-the-art facility and the school district has received much-needed money for capital projects.

Telecommunications provider, Vocus Communications has posted positive financial results since listing on the ASX a year ago. Revenue increased 77 % to A$30.98 million and profit before tax boosted 80% to A$10.22 million for the year ending June 30.

During the financial year, Vocus acquired E3 Network’s data centres in Sydney and Melbourne; PerthIX data centre located in the Perth CBD and Digital River’s fibre optic network.

IBM's worldwide server revenue jumped a healthy 24.5% in the second quarter, putting it neck and neck with Hewlett-Packard for the top spot, according to IDC.

ServerCentral is adding more than 3 megawatts of critical load and 20,000 sq ft to its data centre in the DuPont Fabros Technology facility near Chicago. The company said cloud services, and the demand for high-quality colocation space, are fuelling the expansion. The project’s first phase will add 2,000 sq ft of space, with power and cooling density of more than 360 watts per sq ft. The second and larger phase of ServerCentral’s build out is scheduled for availability in the first quarter of 2012.

Macquarie Telecom has expanded its investment war chest after returning a full-year net profit after tax that was 70% higher for a second year in a row. Macquarie Telecom chief executive David Tudehope said the company had picked up a A$30 million line of credit to fund investments and acquisitions over the coming year as the hosting specialist reported NPAT (net profit after tax) of A$17.7m for the year to June 30.

BT has announced the opening of an international network traffic routing facility at Melkbosstrand in the Western Cape, further strengthening its position as a leading provider of networked IT services to multinational companies in South Africa and globally. Navy CIO Terry Halvorsen plans to trim IT budgets via cloud computing, data centre and app consolidation, thin clients, enterprise licensing, and rigorous spending controls. The Department of the Navy, on a mission to cut 25% from its business IT budget over the next five years, is implementing strict IT spending oversight rules, investing in thin clients, pushing hard on data centre and app consolidation, and working on department-wide enterprise technology licenses, Navy CIO Terry Halvorsen has said.

The total cloud market in India, currently at US$400 million will reach a market value of US$ 4.5 billion by 2015; of which private cloud adoption will dominate and account for US$3.5 billion in revenues, growing at over 60%, according to a study "Private Cloud Landscape in India", released by EMC and Zinnov Management Consulting, a management consulting firm.

Verizon Communications has announced that it has acquired CloudSwitch, an innovative provider of cloud software technology, in a deal that will simplify the move to the enterprise cloud and help to boost industry adoption. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

IBM has announced details of several major deals in the financial services industry as part of a move by banks to improve operational efficiency and benefit from recent advances in mobile and internet technologies.

Plans by Datacom to build a new data centre in Wellington are well advanced, says CEO Greg Davidson. However, he is not disclosing any details until a decision is made on the Government’s planned infrastructure-as-a-service contract. Datacom is on a shortlist of three vendors to provide data centre services. The others are IBM and Revera. The Department of Internal Affairs has indicated that two will be chosen.

Adams County School District 50 has selected Critigen to provide IT managed services to its campuses and all associated users. The contract represents the tenth straight year that the school district has renewed their agreement with Critigen.

Computacenter has sent a shudder through the channel after announcing a 23% slump in first-half UK product sales. Despite posting a rise in both profits and sales at a group level, the industry bellwether's UK revenue fell by 16% year on year to £547.3 million in the six months to 30 June.

At a group level, Computacenter posted a 25% rise in adjusted pre-tax profit to £26.6 m on revenue that rose six per cent to £1.37billion (up 3.1% excluding acquisitions).

CA Technologies has announced that it has been chosen by Tesco to manage and monitor its global IT infrastructure across the entire Tesco Group, including Tesco Bank, Tesco DotCom and Tesco Mobile.

The US$45 million deal sees a number of CA Technologies solutions being implemented to give Tesco visibility into the health and performance of its IT supply chain, including mainframe, desktop computers, servers, networks, credit card transactions, suppliers and supply orders. The investment will help Tesco to take action before any IT problems evolve and affect services to customers.
