Level 3 Communications and Global Crossing have announced that the U.S. Department of Justice has cleared Level 3's previously announced acquisition of Global Crossing. The clearance completes the process under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976 (HSR), and is effective immediately.
Level 3 also announced that the Federal Communications Commission has issued an order approving the transaction, effective immediately.

Google is set to invest €75 million in a new energy efficient data centre in west Dublin. The project is expected to create some 200 jobs as a result of the construction of the centre, with the facility expected to employ some 30 staff once operational.

Specialist Computer Holding's UK business has broken through the £1 billion turnover barrier for the first time, following a double-digit sales hike in its fiscal 2011. The UK's Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has revealed plans for a three-year, £300 million IT services contract for the prison service, that will form part of the Ministry's transition to a new operating model for IT.
The contract is to support the National Offender Management Service's IT infrastructure, including networks and applications at prisons and agency headquarters, from July 2012. According to a contract notice just published, the contract will "replace the current services, pending transition ... to the Future ICT Sourcing target operating model".

The federal government has expanded the pool of data centres eligible for consolidation and now plans to close even more of the facilities than previously designated. Chief Information Officer Steven VanRoekel said the government is no longer limiting its data centre count to those centres measuring at least 500 sq ft. Lifting that minimum has increased the number of centres for consideration for closing from less than 2,100 to nearly 2,800. “I wanted to scope it so everything was game,” he said.

The Upper Austrian municipality of Kronstorf is waiting for search engine giant Google to start building a data centre for which Google had bought 75 hectares of land three years ago. National broadcaster ORF reported that the decision to build at Kronstorf was made by Google partly because the company wants to use only renewable energy, hence the location near the water powered plants at the river Enns. Moreover Google has already planted 13,000 trees on the acquired land.

IBM has annouced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Platform Computing, a privately held company headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The acquisition is anticipated to close in the fourth quarter of 2011, subject to the satisfaction of closing conditions. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Local tech pros slam Hong Kong's reservation of two hectares of land in Tsueng Kwan O for data centre use as lacking a longer-term vision. Private equity firm ABRY Partners has announced that it has completed its acquisition of web hosting provider Xand Corporation. This acquisition comes two months after ABRY Partners and Berkshire Partners acquired colocation firm The Telx Group.

Microsoft has agreed to lease the water treatment plant attached to one of its United States data centres to the area's municipal council. The company said that the City of Quincy would pay an annual lease fee of $US10 for the plant with the option to buy it outright in 30 years. The lease means the city takes responsibility for the operation, maintenance and management of the plant.
The government's effort to consolidate data centres will yield far less in savings than originally projected, agencies say. Instead of saving US$3 billion by eliminating more than 800 data centres by 2015, as the Office of Management and Budget has projected, agencies now expect savings of only US$630 million and US$5 billion over a longer period, according to an OMB estimate based on agencies' latest data consolidation plans, which were made available last week.
TPI, an Information Services Group company, has released data showing that a single acquisition-related mega-deal fuelled a record surge in global outsourcing market performance during the third quarter. The 3Q11 Global TPI Index, which measures commercial contracts valued at $25 million or more, recorded total contract value of US$25.1 billion. The total, the highest-ever for a third quarter, represented an increase of 41 percent over the third quarter of 2010 and 31% over the second quarter of 2011.

Global data centre hardware spending is projected to reach US$98.9 billion in 2011, up 12.7% from 2010 spending of US$87.8 billion, according to analyst firm Gartner. Attorney General Martha Coakley’s office has said that it reached a deal with developers that should advance construction of a computing centre in Holyoke. The deal, Coakley’s office said, includes a promise not to sue property owner Holyoke Gas & Electric as a non-profit moves forward with plans for the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center. “The agreement limits the liability related to contamination on the property in exchange for promises to clean up the property and pursue the redevelopment project,” Coakley’s office said.

Dimension Data subsidiary, Internet Solutions has increased its majority stake in its Kenyan operation, from 51% to 80% as it looks to expand its East African business interests. IS initially acquired a 51% stake in local Kenyan service provider iConnect in 2005, which was rebranded IS Kenya. Following unprecedented growth in the east African market, IS and Dimension Data made the decision to increase the group's shareholding to 80%, with an option to acquire the outstanding balance of 20%.

EMC Corp.’s quarterly profit soared by 28% on stronger demand for its data storage products, and the Hopkinton-based company stuck with its full-year profit forecast despite the shaky economy. The Bay State technology giant reported third-quarter sales of US$4.98 billion, an 18% increase, and said it’s still on track to hit at least US$19.8 billion in revenue for all of 2011.
The company’s quarterly profit rose to US$606 million, up from US$473 million a year ago.

Intel reported profit and revenue gains for the third quarter of fiscal 2011 on strong PC and server chip sales, overcoming a drop in Atom tablet and netbook chip sales. The company saw strong data centre growth, driven by the growth of mobile and cloud computing, Otellini said.

China Unicom has begun construction on a business centre in Chongqing, reports Xinhua News Agency. The centre will be equipped with 20,000 cabinets and 180,000 servers that will facilitate the development of China Unicom's clouding computing business.

Demand for data backup and disaster recovery services has doubled this month, fuelled by flood-preparation measures at large companies. The Information and Communication Technology Ministry says flood-crisis preparedness and recovery strategies are being detailed for nationwide communications systems, including fixed-line and mobile phone service, data backup centres, servers and call centres. Data centre operators have been stocking oil for use in generators to provide service for up to five days if the power is cut off.

ManTech expects the acquisition to be accretive to its earnings per share in 2012.
Following the story earlier this month that Facebook is set to build a data centre in Lulea, near the Arctic Circle in Northern Sweden, NCC Construction Sweden has announced it has secured an order from Facebook to construct the facility. The contract has been signed with Pinnacle Sweden AB. The total order value is approximately SEK 800 million, of which NCC’s share is worth approximately SEK 400 million.
