According to the International Data Corporation's Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, factory revenue in the worldwide server market decreased 7.2% year over year to US$14.2 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011. This was the first quarterly decline in factory revenue in two years. Worldwide server shipments increased 2.0% to 2.2 million units in 4Q11 when compared with the year-ago period. For the full year 2011, worldwide server revenue increased 5.8% to US$52.3 billion when compared to 2010, while worldwide unit shipments increased 4.2% to 8.3 million units.
21Vianet Group, the largest carrier-neutral Internet data centre services provider in China, have announced its unaudited financial results for the fourth quarter of 2011.
Full Year 2011 financial highlights include: Net revenues increased by 94.4% to RMB1.0 billion (US$162.2 million) from RMB525.2 million in 2010; Adjusted EBITDA increased by 149.9% to RMB209.0 million (US$33.2 million) from RMB83.7 million in 2010 and Adjusted net profit increased by 185.9% to RMB170.0 million (US$27.0 million) from RMB59.5 million in 2010.
A free service that syncs data across multiple devices, SugarSync, has announced that it raised US$15 million in a Series D round of funding. This round was led by Coral Group with participation from Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Sigma Partners, Hatteras Venture Partners and Hercules. SugarSync has now reached US$50 million in funding. The new funds will be used to double the staff sometime this year and SugarSync is also planning to add another data centre.
Metro Nashville will offer HCA a seven-year tax break for expanding in Nashville. HCA announced last week a $200 million expansion project that includes a new data centre in Antioch. The investment is to create more than 150 jobs over the next five years.

China's IT outsourcing sector grew by 40% to reach $60.1 billion in 2011, according to statistics from the country's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
The combined IT services and software sector, including the internal market, rose by 32.4% to reach $292 billion during the year, Chinese news agency Xinhua reports. This was 4.4% faster than the industry's average annual growth rate during 2006 to 2010. Software exports increased 18.4% to $30.4 billion while software (development) outsourcing rose by 40.3% to $6 billion.
Indian conglomerate Tata Communications Ltd has confirmed speculation that it is considering a possible purchase of Cable & Wireless Worldwide (C&WW) plc. The site has 14 MW of existing utility service, and when completed, the site is expected to garner over US$50 million in investment as a high density, Tier III colocation facility.

Westerville has opened the doors to its US$7 million community data centre.
The project, called WeConnect, located at 35 Collegeview Road, spans 16,000 sq ft. The data centre provides area businesses with access to the city’s 66-mile fibre-optic network, cloud computing and secured data storage. Prices depend on the services and range between US$100 and US$100,000 a month. It took three years to complete the project, city officials said. To help with the US$7 million cost, Franklin County allocated a US$5.75 million stimulus bond to the city that isn’t taxable.
Telus has finally released the decision on where it will build a new data centre, and it isn’t Prince George. Kamloops will be home to the “one of the world’s greenest data centres”. This will be a C$100 million dollar project.
The Muscat International Airport expansion project, an ambitious undertaking conceived in line with the government’s Vision 2020 economic development strategy, is making excellent headway, according to authorities. Minnesota-based telecommunications firm HickoryTech has announced it has completed its acquisition of Fargo, North Dakota-based hosting and colocation services provider IdeaOne Telecom Group for US$28 million. The deal is the latest in the ongoing trend of telecommunication firms moving into the hosting space in an effort to become a one stop shop for SMBs. It also goes to show that many acquisitions of hosting companies are implemented for the purpose of expanding its customer base in new regions.
CoreSpace, a dedicated server and colocation data service provider has annocued it has bought a Dallas data centre and in addition will be relocating its headquarters to Dallas from Las Vegas.
The data centre provider has bought a 30,000-sq ft building at 7505 John Carpenter Freeway, near the intersection of State Highway 183 and Mockingbird Lane in Dallas. The financial details of the transaction were undisclosed.
The German ICT market is forecast to grow by 1.6% t to €151 billion in 2012, according to industry group Bitkom. Sales from the IT market (IT hardware, software and IT services) are forecast to grow 3.1% to €72.4 billion in 2012. Sales of tablet PCs are expected to grow 19 % to €1.3 billion, with notebook sales growing 4%.
The software market will grow 4.4% to around €17 billion, with IT services growing 2.5% to €34.9 billion. The telecoms sector will see sales grow 0.6% to €66.1 billion in 2012, with mobile data service sales growing 12% to €8.4 billion.

The UK's Department of Health and IT services giant CSC have reached a new agreement over the troubled electronic health records contract which means the latter's Lorenzo system still may be used, as long as NHS Trusts want it. The DoH said the agreement involves a "hugely improved settlement for the NHS", which means that local Trusts greater choice over whether they want to use CSC's Lorenzo electronic health records software, in line with the government's decentralised NHS IT strategy.

HCL Technologies has said it has received a US$300 million contract to provide technology infrastructure management services to Finland's UPM-Kymmene for the next five years. HCL Technologies will provide data centres, network services and information technology services to the Finnish paper maker, the two companies said.
HCL Technologies will also absorb 250 employees of UPM Kymmene by August 2012, the company said. The company will set up a data centre in Finland to service UPM Kymmene.
CTERA Networks, the international storage solution vendor for value-added resellers and managed services providers, has honed in on the European storage market and locked-up a deal with Swisscom IT Services, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Swisscom AG, one of the largest telecom providers in all of Europe.
IT considerations are not given adequate attention in the due diligence prior to mergers and acquisitions, according to research from Ernst & Young. As a result, said E&Y, deals can lead to problems further down the line. E&Y questioned 220 senior corporate and private equity executives across Europe and found that only half the respondents conducted separate pre-deal IT diligence for their last transaction.
IT services firm Interactive has scaled back plans to build out co-location data centre space in Melbourne, redirecting a planned A$50 million investment into managed services and office space. Managing director Christopher Ride said the change was sparked by the impending entry of a host of large co-lo players in Melbourne - including NextDC, Metronode and Digital Realty - and faster-than-expected adoption of IT managed services.
Evans Randal, the privately held investment banking and private equity group specialising in alternative assets, has announced that it has acquired Sovereign House in London Docklands for £27 million on behalf of a holding company in which it has co-invested with private investor clients for Saudi Arabia. The building was purchased for a managed fund of AXA Real Estate and the deal reflects a net initial yield of 7.2%.
Steel ORCA expects to break ground early this spring on its long-awaited data centre project at the former U.S. Steel Fairless Works factory.
The company has completed environmental studies and is prepared to construct the 700,000-sq ft facility on 40 acres. It will cost about US$750 million at build-out, said Dave Crocker, CEO of Steel ORCA. “As soon as we can get our building permits, we’ll be in the ground,” Crocker said.
Construction work is under way at Apple Inc.'s data centre in North Carolina, which will be powered in part by a private solar farm being built by the company. The Hickory Daily Record reports that environmental permits have been issued for construction at the data centre campus in the town of Maiden. Also, a contractor for work at the site has filed for a building permit. It's not clear if the construction is for a second data centre that was planned, or for something else.
Vocus Communications is set to sign an increased bank loan worth up to A$18 million to fund the expansion of its data centre and dark fibre network. According to its chief executive James Spenceley the company already had an existing and untapped A$7 million loan facility on its books. He said the company had received a range of offers to increase this to between A$15 million and A$18 million from a number of banks and would accept one of them “within days”.
Western Digital has completed the acquisition of the hard drive business of Hitachi, and set up two subsidiaries with separate brands and products, to meet the conditions of antitrust regulators. The company said that it completed the acquisition of Viviti Technologies, formerly Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, effective March 8 for US$3.9 billion (£2.5 billion) in cash and 25 million shares of its common stock valued at about US$0.9 billion.

The transaction included nine office/data centre buildings totalling 846,000 sq ft along with approximately 40 acres of development land. The Fund retained approximately 12 acres of land for future retail development.

Rostelecom, Russia’s national telecommunications operator, has announced that as part of a project to develop a national cloud computing platform, it has started building its main data centre in Moscow, which will become the largest in Russia. Rostelecom is planning to invest RUB 10 billion in the project by the end of 2015. The cloud computing platform, which is solely being executed by Rostelecom, is part of the “Informational society 2011-2020” federal programme.

Rackspace the biggest competitor to Amazon.com in the market for Web-based data centres reached a record high after sales and profit topped analysts’ estimates.
Rackspace’s revenue in that area jumped 86% last quarter to US$58.5 million, the San Antonio-based company has said. Sales in the traditional dedicated server business, where the company manages specific machines for customers, rose 23% to US$224.8 million. Net income jumped 85% to US$25 million from US$13.5 million, a year earlier. Revenue climbed 32% to US$283.3 million.

Cheyenne is one of two finalists for a proposed US$112 million data centre, state business officials have said. State officials are looking at offering US$10 million in grants to help lure the data centre, which would be owned by an unnamed Fortune 100 company with an international presence, according to a Wyoming Business Council project description.
BT has announced a contract with NATO’s Consultation, Command and Control Agency (NC3A), which is responsible for delivering technology in support of NATO’s global operations. Zayo Group and AboveNet, have announced that their boards of directors have approved a definitive agreement under which Zayo will acquire AboveNet for approximately US$2.2 billion. Under the terms of the agreement, each share of AboveNet common stock issued and outstanding immediately prior to the transaction will be entitled to receive US$84.00 per share in cash, representing a 13% premium over AboveNet’s closing price on March 16, 2012 and a 21% premium over the average closing stock price for the past 60 days.
The Communications and Information Technology Commission estimates that the volume of spending on the ICT services in the Kingdom rose to SR83 billion in 2011 compared to SR21 billion in 2002, an average annual growth rate of about 14%. Teraco Data Environments, South Africa’s first provider of vendor neutral data centres, has announced that NAPAfrica, the first open and public peering facility with a national presence for network operators and ISP’s is now live, and free, running from its Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban data centres. Peering is the process where Internet Service Providers (ISP) exchange traffic. NAPAfrica operates an exchange, which is the physical infrastructure through which the ISPs peer.

Cumbria county council has decided not to outsource its ICT to Computacenter after the two organisations failed to finalise the terms of a proposed services contract. Managed services provider Brennan IT has inked a deal to use the Sydney and US data centres of Equinix as it eyes expansion into global markets.
