News Corporation claimed to have reached its goal of carbon neutrality this week, A memo from chief executive Rupert Murdoch to employees outlined the financial benefits of the company's four-year initiative to reduce carbon emissions from its facilities and operations. He talked up News Corp's ongoing commitment to becoming more environmentally friendly, tying in the upside for shareholders.

Datapipe, a provider of managed services and infrastructure for IT and cloud computing, announced today that all of its US based data centres are now powered by 100 percent renewable energy. This makes Datapipe the only IT Company in NJ and one of thirteen nationwide to be a member of the EPA's Green Power Leadership Club.

As part of the company's sustainability strategy, Datapipe's California data centre, located in San Jose, has fully converted to running operations on renewably sourced electricity. Datapipe converted its other US-based data centres to renewable power in 2010.

At its annual Technical Forum, IT industry sustainability group The Green Grid continued to expand its number of metrics to track data centre sustainability efforts. The Green Grid added a number of metrics that give a more complete and holistic view of data centre sustainability:

• WUE, or Water Usage Effectiveness, which is a metric that assesses the water used on-site in operating a data centre, including water used for humidification and water evaporated on-site for energy production or cooling of the data centre and its support systems.
