Apple must deliver; Nevada to 'claw back' taxes if job conditions unmet
Apple is poised to get an estimated US$89 million in tax breaks from Reno, Washoe County and the state of Nevada over the next decade but it could also be forced to pay that money back if it doesn’t clear several financial hurdles in the years to come.
That’s because the company, which plans to open a data center east of Sparks and a downtown Reno office, agreed to several potential “clawbacks” (conditions under which governments would take the money back) as part of its deal with the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development, said Steve Hill, director of the office. The deal includes audits by the state Department of Taxation to ensure the company is meeting those goals. Apple did not immediately comment for this story.
