City creates draw for high-tech businesses

The Columbia City Council last night took a major step toward future economic development by approving incentives to entice high-tech industries to set up shop in Columbia. The two approved agenda items will work hand in hand to provide businesses such as data centres with development agreements offering large amounts of cheap power as well as reimbursing those companies up to half of the costs of building the necessary on-site infrastructure to receive it.

The policy would only apply to large electrical customers who use 10 megawatts of power or more — a level City Manager Bill Watkins said is not used by any current business in Columbia.
