Joint DoD and VA EHR agreement is for common architecture, data and data centres

A senior Defense Department official revealed a few more details about what the joint DoD and Veterans Affairs Department electronic health record system will look like while testifying before a House panel. VA Secretary Eric Shinseki had announced that the two departments have come to agreement on developing a joint EHR, but offered few details on what the joint platform will look like.

DoD Deputy Chief Management officer Elizabeth McGrath told the House Armed Services subcommittee on emerging threats and capabilities that the gist of the agreement is to utilise a "common architecture, common data services and data centres." "It would be a standard approach to exchanging data, as opposed to the interfaces that we do today, so it would be a data driven approach to information exchange," McGrath added.
