Suncorp, Microsoft in talks on cloud but lack of local data centre a stumbling block

Suncorp would unhesitatingly adopt Microsoft's cloud services if the software giant had a data centre in Australia, according to a company senior executive. The financial services firm would readily host Exchange and Office in Microsoft's cloud if such a facility existed, says Jeff Smith, chief executive of Suncorp business services.

The insurance leader's Peoplesoft payroll application sits within an external cloud hosted by Infosys in its Melbourne and Sydney data centres. "There is no technical limitation, but there are regulatory issues because Microsoft doesn't have data centres in Australia. "Microsoft doesn't want to open a data centre here. They just don't think there's enough volume."
