University of Arkansas data centre loses power, Internet down

A spokesman for the University of Arkansas, Steve Voorhies, said the data centre in the Administrative Services Building lost power about 5 p.m. Friday night. "The University of Arkansas successfully restored power Saturday afternoon and is working to restore network connectivity to the servers that host the university’s web pages and e-mail services following a major power failure," Voorhies said. The power failure was in an underground power cable conduit on campus.

"The failure triggered a series of electrical and mechanical failures involving primary and secondary sources of electricity. With only limited electrical power, the university could not operate the servers which support the university’s web presence and certain e-mail services. The system that stores data never lost power and was shut down appropriately as a precaution to protect and secure data," Voorhies said.
