Virgin targets data centres with carrier-grade connectivity

Virgin Media Business has announced plans to use its nationwide fibre network to offer carrier-grade connectivity to data centres across the UK. The company will give data centre managers the ability to connect up to 8,000 customers at speeds of up to 10Gbit/s, while reducing space and power requirements to offer a guaranteed level of service.

Virgin Media Business product manager David Green said that the firm's position in the networking world allows it to offer this carrier-grade connectivity to meet the growing pressure on data centre infrastructure. Green added that one of the key growth areas that Virgin aims to capitalise on is cloud computing, which it expects to grow rapidly in the coming years, increasing the strain on data centres.
