eCool Solutions, Dataracks
eCool Solutions provides a complete environmental management solution for a new or existing datacentre. It will analyse the datacentre using thermal and environmental surveying and then design an improved airflow management system that will improve efficiency of cooling while reducing energy consumption.

eCool Solutions was one of the first to become an endorser of the EU Code of Practice on Datacentre Efficiency and its recommendations have helped many of the world’s leading datacentres to increase their energy efficiency and reduce their carbon dioxide emissions inline with government legislation. It is involved in several pan-European roll-out programmes.

eCool Solutions was established by Jeremy Hartley, founder of Dataracks the UK manufacturers, designers and installers of enclosures and related products for datacentres. He had become concerned about the escalating energy costs experienced by datacentre managers and was convinced that innovative design could solve the problem.

Following an extensive modelling exercise which discovered stagnant air, hot spots and excessive hot and cold temperatures he came up with the answer – by improving the airflow he was able to maintain the temperature of the datacentre within IT manufacturers guidelines while significantly reducing the need for cooling. This improves the resilience of the datacentre and slashes the energy consumption.

To support the consultancy work of its sister company, Dataracks has introduced a range of products with EU Best Practice built-in. Including complete aisle containment, server racks, blanking panels, mats, floor tile grommets, low energy lighting, replacement floor tiles with integral cable grommets.

Its flagship product EcoCabinet, is made in the UK to order, with blanking panels pre-fitted, vented doors to maximise free air cooling, built-in airflow management and a sleek light coloured finish to reflect heat and increase light levels.

CH2MHILL
IDC ARCHITECT

IDC Architects, a member of the CH2M HILL family of companies, is an international technology leader in the planning and designs of advanced solutions for mission critical facilities. We’ve earned that reputation by applying our fully integrated services from a multidiscipline staff of architects, engineers, and technologists to the current and next generation of advanced technology facilities.

We founded our company with the belief that high-performance buildings must combine a clear architectural vision with advanced systems engineering. By rethinking mission critical design from the ground up, we deliver world-class performance, great people spaces, and cost savings over the life of the facility.

We approach data centre design from a “whole building” perspective, with a commitment to sustainability that permeates every level of our practice. With innovative approaches to critical areas such as hot and cold aisle separation, use of outside air, and site orientation, we’ve helped our clients save millions in operations and life/cycle costs. By creating green, ergonomic interiors, we support employee well-being and help businesses thrive. Our designs are for people, not just machines.

Our design process features leading-edge computer visualisation and analysis tools such as 3D rapid prototyping and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Rapid prototyping enables us to test different layouts and build a working 3D model of each functional area. By evaluating massing and spatial arrangements in real time, we see how decisions impact flexibility, adjacencies, and overall building form, and avoid later changes impacting cost and schedule. We apply CFD technology in data centre design to predict and use natural airflow to reduce energy consumption, life cycle cost, and carbon footprint.

CH2M HILL, an employee-owned, global leader in full-service engineering, construction, and operations. We are currently engaged in projects throughout North America, Europe, and Asia, and have the capability to deliver services anywhere in the world.

NanoHex

Transforming the future of heat management

NanoHex is an €8.3 million FP7 project, involving 12 top organisations from Europe and Israel. It aims to transform the future of heat management, combating heat build up in high tech industries with an innovative nanothermal fluid that has been shown to increase cooling efficiency by more than 40%.

The dispersal of nanoparticles into current heat transfer liquids such as water, glycol and oil, has been shown to significantly enhance their thermal capabilities. NanoHex aims to develop maximum performance, nanothermal fluid cooling systems for application by industries currently constrained by high heat loads, including power electronics and data centres.

As microelectronics components continue to generate large amounts of heat, the cooling capacity of a data centre is a major limitation to its power density. However, the use of a nanothermal fluid would enhance heat transfer and provide a more compact cooling system. The same processing power could then be housed within fewer cabinets, reducing capital expenditure. Enhanced cooling would economically increase the energy efficiency of data centres and significantly improve their overall performance.

The 3 year long NanoHex project began in September 2009 and hopes to open the door to a range of new markets that require super efficient thermal management.

DATA IV

Because your IT system represents a strategic investment that is vital for your company, Colony Capital and Alcatel have created a new site that is completely dedicated to hosting your IT infrastructure and securing your data: DATA IV

“DATA IV's goal is to serve major global corporations, particularly listed companies that are subject to regulations that encourage them to host their IT equipment in highly secure, Tier 4 infrastructures (1)”
Christophe Fournage, Président de DATA 4

DATA IV pushed standards beyond the limits to define new technical standards when they created the most state-of-the-art data center in Europe.

Facilities designed from A to Z to ensure the security of your data
The DATA IV concept leverages the latest breakthroughs in security, technology, infrastructure and organization. By starting with a clean slate, the founders of DATA IV have managed to bypass the usual constraints - urban planning, adapting existing buildings, etc. - to design the ultimate in data centers, entirely from scratch to serve major global corporations.

A secure site dedicated to research and technology
DATA IV was built on the former Alcatel Marcoussis site, approximately 30 kilometers south of Paris. This 120-hectare complex, a historical French telecommunications research center, enjoys the highest security.

A key location and privileged infrastructures in the Paris region
DATA IV is located less than 2 km from the Villejust site, the largest French electrical supply post, which represents a considerable advantage for the development of the data center in terms of its power supply.

Data IV is on the cutting edge of innovation in sustainable development
DATA IV developed a unique, revolutionary cooling process, protected by two patents, that significantly reduces the energy needed to run the air conditioning system. It has already obtained two French CEE certificates (certified energy savings), and a third one is underway.

DATA IV and TIER IV
The site achieves the closest possible approximation of total compliance with the Uptime Institute's Tier 4 classification, with an uptime objective of virtually 100%.

The Land Reserve, a unique asset in the Paris Region
With a 120-hectare land reserve, of which 40 hectares are completely developed, the site will be able to meet all our clients future expansion needs.

A European ambition
Building on their success on the Marcoussis site, DATA IV plans to accompany its clients across Europe by developing two new data center campuses in London and Munich. These two openings are planned for 2010 and 2011.

(1) Tier 4: standards for data centers defined by the Uptime Institute that classifies data centers according to their uptime. Tier 4 represents the highest level with an availability of virtually 100%
