DATA CENTRES IN SPAIN AND PORTUGAL FORECAST 50% GROWTH IN SPACE BY 2010
One of the key findings from BroadGroups latest report.

London and Barcelona, 11th September 2007 – A new report from international consultants BroadGroup predicts more than 50% growth in space for data centre facilities in both Spain and Portugal by 2010.

In the first report to assess the Iberian markets, growth in the data centre sector is forecast to be sustained over the next few years. Buoyed by a strong economy in recent years, data centres have moved perhaps more sharply than elsewhere in Europe to increase their focus on the provision of managed services, although telcos interviewed expressed uncertainty about the opportunity for high density services.

The survey warns of a possible rise in electricity prices in Spain, which could impact data centres services in the short term as they adjust pricing and in some cases business models to accommodate the higher charges. Colocation and web hosting prices, which have remained inexpensive and generally below those offered elsewhere in Europe, are also likely to be affected by an increase in power charges.

The report also identifies opportunities for market entry, and for investors in the sector who may be seeking to acquire market presence. Research for the report suggests that there will inevitably be some consolidation of players, through M&A and also the reorganisation of companies.

“Data Centre markets in both Spain and Portugal have regained a level of confidence in recent years and players are expanding and upgrading infrastructure and services to sustain growth and demand,” commented Pablo Diantina, Senior Analyst at BroadGroup.

The report research found that the SME (Small Medium size Enterprise) market, which represents the large majority of the economy, will form a new opportunity for outsourcing services by Data Centres. In contrast to the corporate market, however, the adoption of new services may take longer to materialize.
