DATA CENTRES INDIA
Published June 2008 - 101pp

Report Synopsis
This first survey of data centres in India reveals a fast changing landscape within an economy in transition and currently experiencing growth of 10% per year. In such an environment, data centres are set for growth. A scheme for establishing Data Centres across states and union territories as part of a national e-governance plan is just one indicator of future development.

Fuelled by offshoring, overseas MNCs, and domestic demand, data centres in India have experienced significant growth over recent years, and as the survey reveals, new build and plans for new build are well advanced producing a spike in space over the next two years that will more than double current capacity. Revenues too for the data centre market will tip beyond the USD 1 billion mark by next year.

Clustered in location near more reliable sources of power, India has the opportunity to become a global hub. Yet their operators confront a number of formidable challenges. Most concerning are those relating to power and cooling requirements, but there are more on the horizon. Conversely, suppliers of specialist equipment hold a significant addressable market in delivering solutions to mitigate these pressures.

Pricing is also chaotic, and to sustain a competitive positioning to its near neighbours, and in the longer term to China, Indian data centres will need to develop new and more rational pricing methodologies.

The core of the report details profiles of 34 players in India, both overseas and domestic, and the report examines current availability, location and expansion plans. The scale and capacity of the international ambitions of the top five players is supported by significant and growing demand from the local market. Although Global MNCs are becoming picky about the robustness of power supply, security and green credentials, overseas systems integrators and consultancies are sustaining and expanding their investments in India.

Although lacking “Tier IV” category data centres, the rapidly evolving market and promised building programme, means there is likely to be a new and higher level of capability made available between now and 2010.

Overall the report presents a holistic view of the challenges and opportunities for Data Centres in India, and offers users, suppliers and investors a detailed perspective of segment growth.
