The Next Big Thing In Hosted Software - India Will Gain From SaaS

The inaugural BroadGroup Hosted Software Summit held in London on the 21st of March provided a wide-ranging insight into the future of the hosted software sector.

In the closing session of the day – which discussed the emergence of the hosted software marketplace and future trends – a number of views were expressed by the panel participants about the future direction of the industry which included:

That SaaS benefits were becoming more widely accepted by large organisations
That Salesforce.com would be a prime acquisition target for a larger software company;
That there would be a combination of offshoring and SaaS – and
That the Indian IT services firms were best placed to perform this task

In the Web 2.0 panel of the Hosted Software Summit ran by BroadGroup, the panellists tried to establish what additional benefits can Web 2.0 bring, and how long would take before they were realised. Investment in Web 2.0 has significantly increased - in Europe more than GBP 144 million were raised by 54 European companies of which 16 did not disclose the amount invested.

In the UK alone Web 2.0 has seen around GBP 24 million investments in 2005 with the amount growing by over 300% in 2006. Plenty of the investment to date has been in consumer applications – for example http://www.reevoo.com/ - ‘Real reviews from real customers’ - according to Paul Fisher from First Capital, who added we are likely to see more investment in the future in business applications. There are a number of definitions in the market for Web 2.0, which Orange described as ‘ Right Now’ with the younger generation expecting fast access and in the right format.
