Colt To Expand Managed Services In 2007

BroadGroup interviewed Eugene Viskovic, Senior Director, COLT Managed Services, about the importance of Managed Services and Data Centres in the company’s 2007 plans.

COLT is currently experiencing booming demand for their Data Centre-based Managed Service products. “The UK is showing the highest growth,” says Eugene Viskovic. “France, Germany and Spain are also showing strong growth. As a result, Managed Services account for over 50% of our Data Centre revenues in those 4 countries.” Traditionally COLT’s Data Centre revenues were dominated by colocation services, but the proportion is now falling. “Eighty percent of our Managed Services business comes from direct sales to the large enterprise,” says Viskovic.

Typically COLT’s Managed Services portfolio is used as part of a network solution, offering network services together with hosting as part of a DR or Business Continuity Plan offer, with security or other application services. The type of customer who requires a complex bundled service is typically the larger European MNC, so it makes sense to address such a complex sale direct. Up to 70% of COLT’s Managed Service customers also use a network service, particularly an IP-VPN or Ethernet service. “This is not surprising, as we consider that the network is driven by the application being used,” he adds. By combining a wholly owned network with 14 Data Centres, COLT is able to cater completely for the IT application from end to end. Like other vendors COLT is also facing a rising demand for Power and Cooling with average rack requirements of 15k/W per rack – much higher than the co-location average – due to the amount of additional hosted services supplied per rack. In the UK the finance sector continues to drive the requirement for more and more high density hosting requirements.

Into 2007, COLT will be developing their first new UK Data Centre outside London which is based in Birmingham. The company is also in the final stages of evaluating where they will base their new London Data Centre – an announcement will be made in the next few weeks.
