Future Challenges For European Data Centres
The BroadGroup Data Centres Europe 2007 Conference held
over two days from the 22nd to the 23rd of March in London looked into
the future for the Data Centre provider across Europe. Although the
present trends for the Data Centre looked bright with high utilisation
and demand for services outstripping supply in many established markets,
a number of issues are emerging which may impact the business:
- Shortage of space for new build Data Centre sites, with planning
permission difficult to obtain in developed markets
- In some areas a shortage of new power and telecoms infrastructure
was limiting expansion
- Concern was expressed about the impact of proposed regulation aimed
at limiting carbon emissions by properties
- Concern whether the Data Centre sector as a whole is putting forward
its case about its critical role in a positive way
- Debate about the best way for Data Centre providers to engage with
the wider IT services and hardware community on issues such as power
and cooling
