Special Report: IXEurope Munich Acquisition Only days after their flotation in early April sector acquisition specialist IXEurope were announcing yet another deal with the purchase of the company’s 11th data centre. IX have acquired the lease on the 11, 600 sq m former KPNQwest Cybercentre in Munich, Germany and announced a substantial pre-letting of the current 4,600 sq m of net technical space to a “leading global Internet company” with a contract valued in excess of £6.9 million (€10 million) over a six year period. The data centre was built in 2000 for KPNQwest at a cost in excess of £17 million (€25 million) to provide approximately 4,600m2 of net data centre space and was one of a string of 14 that opened in 2000/2001 across the Ebone network before the joint venture between Dutch incumbent KPN and US regional Bell Qwest was put into liquidation in May 2002. The asset has been acquired for a “nominal amount” together with a long lease for the property. IXEurope plans to invest approximately £1 million (€1.5 million) on refurbishing and upgrading the new facility and the site will be opened in phases over the next 12 months. The move follows hard on the heels of the company’s purchase of the 56,000 sq m Digiplex site in Frankfurt in October last year and so makes Munich the company’s fourth German facility, alongside the existing two in Frankfurt and third in Dusseldorf. Indeed it could be argued that Munich has very much represented a high water mark for the colo industry that has not been approached for a very long time, with at least ten or so sites either opened or planned for the city but of which most have either closed or been abandoned, including those of Telecity, Interxion, Digiplex, NT Telehaus to name but a few operators who have tried but failed in the city during the industry downturn. IXEurope’s expansion in one of the few data centre markets in Europe which is still very much a buyers market could turn out to be an astute contrarian move, but only time will tell. In the meantime however, IXEurope are clearly finding that the numbers in Germany are still stacking up quite nicely.
