Netcetera Opens New Data Centre On The Isle Of Man

BroadGroup interviewed Peter Skelton, Managing Director of Isle of Man-based Netcetera Ltd, about their new Data Centre launching in February.

Netcetera is an ISP and hosting specialist which to date has based its hosting services in London using four of COLT’s Data Centres in London. However from February the 14th 2007 Netcetera will open its first dedicated Data Centre “Dataport” on the Isle of Man based at the Island’s Freeport, near the airport. The new Data Centre will be one of the largest on the island with a total capacity of 16,824 square feet – equivalent to over 700 racks.

Peter Skelton, the Managing Director explains, “Our intention is to fit out the Data Centre space over time in line with customer demand in 12 phases.” The new facility is built up to a Tier Four standard, as defined by the Uptime Institute. Although there is only one electricity supplier available, two separate power feeds are fed into the building. The power supply is built to a 2N+1 standard and the air conditioning is built to a N+1 standard.

Each rack will have 4kW of power delivered to the rack included in the price. Above 4kW there will be an additional charge based on the power metered.

Netcetera will also provide a separate area in the new Data Centre with supplementary air cooling which will cater for high density server applications up to 35kW per rack. Peter Skelton is convinced, despite the current problems for the online gambling industry caused by the banning of online gambling in the US that the future for off-shore hosting in the Isle of Man remains bright.

“The Isle of Man is really committed to supporting e-business. There are huge advantages to coming here, including a strong legal framework; housing; and the absence of government taxes,” he says. “The lock-out of on-line gambling companies from the US market may make them more likely to base their operations in Europe and the Isle of Man will gain so we see demand continuing to increase.”

The Isle of Man offers a range of incentives for companies to base their e-commerce operations on the island. For companies based in the Freeport zone – where the Netcetera Dataport is situated – companies are free to import and export goods without customs duties. Planning restrictions are also relaxed, from inception to opening the Netcetera Dataport was established within 12 months. In common with the rest of the Isle of Man there is a Zero Per Cent Corporation Tax, although VAT is applied at the UK rate.

For a limited promotional period Netcetera are providing a bundled offer of Rack, 4kW Power and 2Mbps of IP connectivity for a price of GBP1,200.00 per month.
