Swisscom IT Services Plans New State-Of-The-Art Data Centre
Swisscom
IT Services has announced that it is to build a dedicated new Data Centre
in Zollikofen, with the intention of starting customer service during
2008. The new Data Centre will be a 6 storey building with around 1,800
square metres of usable server space.
The space is divided into six computer rooms and two communication
rooms. In addition, the new data centre has a modular structure: If
required, the company can expand the building by two additional modules
on the very same site. As a result, more than 6,000 m2 of total usable
space would be available for the outsourcing operation. It will also
be capable of delivering at least 4,500 kW of power – enough,
says Swisscom to supply a city of 15,000 inhabitants.
Under the plan of Swisscom IT Services the Zollikofen site will be
backed up by a second computer site at Berne where data between the
two sites will be mirrored if required by the client. Construction began
in May of this year. In the spring of 2007 the shell of the building
will be completed. It is anticipated that the data centre will begin
its operations during the first quarter of 2008.
Technical Specification
Length x width x height: 40.5m x 29.7m x 27.3m (incl. roof 30.3m)
Building volume: approx. 33,000 m3
Data centre's gross floor space: approx. 6,500 m2
Net usable area: 6 computer rooms with 1,600 m2 and 2 communication
rooms with 160 m2
Planned capacity for electricity and air-conditioning / climate control:
1,400 W/m2 = approx. 4,500 kW per each one
Usable power for IT: 1,200 W/m2 = approx. 2,000 kW per each one
Air-conditioning for the computer rooms: homogenously 1,200 W/m2 via
air with a tolerance of 800 W/m2 over water as direct cooling. At maximum
total of 2,000 kW. That way, it can react quickly to any changes in
IT
The data centre will be supplied redundantly in the area of power supply,
electrical distribution with UPS, diesel generators (NEA), climate control
and also the network connections.
