American Power Conversion (APC), a provider of end-to-end infrastructure availability solutions, has launched Data Centre University, an online educational institution for IT professionals, engineers and people involved in building or operating server rooms and data centres. Data Centre University by APC includes both classroom and Web-based courses. The initial launch offers 14 foundational courses and six advanced courses in the subject areas of data centre design, build and operations.

Degree Controls, a start-up operation has launched Adaptivcool which claims it can reduce the utility bills associated with air conditioning large data centres by up to 30 percent. The system pinpoints hot spots inside a computer room and directs cool air from the room's air conditioner to that spot. The system also directs airflow to prevent cool air from mixing with warm air. By efficiently parcelling the cool air from the room's air conditioner, the overall amount of electricity used is less because the entire room does not have to be cooled to locker temperatures.

TELEHOUSE America, which operates The New York Internet Exchange (NYIIX) and The Los Angeles Internet Exchange (LAIIX), and The London Internet Exchange (LINX) have signed an agreement under which they will work jointly to promote connections between their members and customers. NYIIX is operated by Telehouse out of its Broadway Centre at 25 Broadway ("25B") in Manhattan, New York. Its peak traffic volume current runs at 16Gbps. Telehouse operates LAIIX out of its Los Angeles Centre at 626 Wilshire Blvd. ("626W") in downtown Los Angeles.

The European Commission has said that the euro zone would grow 1.3 percent to 1.9 percent in 2006. With some evidence of re-investment in manufacturing, a perceived upturn in the German economy and declining unemployment (more jobs have been created than lost for the first time since 2001) the prospects bode well for 2006.

Located on the 3rd floor of its rue de Voltaire building, the new 10m Euro centre is the latest in a series of investments since the opening of Telehouse's second Paris site in 2001. Telehouse Paris' facilities now provide 7,000 sq.m of secure colocation space, to companies including the main French Internet Exchange PariX and SfinX. The new facilities are targeted at organisations that require a high availability of business-critical applications, such as those based on internet transactions and communications, internet points of presence and call centres.

VeriCenter, Inc., a managed services and enterprise infrastructure company has successfully completed its SAS 70 Type II audit through the global accounting firm of Ernst & Young. The audit covers all of the company's nationwide Data Centres and each location received an unqualified audit opinion, the highest level attainable. The audit provides assurance that VeriCenter follows policies, procedures, and business processes recognised as best practices for providing a secure, stable data center environment.

HP's Infrastructure Provisioning Service (IPS) and Application Provisioning Service (APS) have been designed to provide additional computing power to enterprises that do not want to deploy servers to handle temporary surges in demand. Utility computing is designed to enable customers to tap into a pool of computing resources hosted by a provider such as HP. HP's new services allow customers to send their data for processing in HP data centres in Paris and Houston.

INetU Managed Hosting has launched a suite of security services that enables organisations to increase security. The security suite, available only to INetU Managed Hosting clients, puts processes in place to identify and address vulnerabilities hidden within Web site code and constantly changing software environments. The services include Operating System Hardening, Security Assessment and Comprehensive System Audit. INetU's Security Assessment service scans a client's servers to detect whether they are vulnerable to known security exploits.

Active Power has sold the first commercial unit of CoolAir DC, based upon Active Power's proprietary thermal and compressed air (TACAS) technology, represents a minute-for-minute alternative to batteries in energy storage applications. A single CoolAir DC unit can provide 85kW of power for up to 15 minutes and, simultaneously, provide cool air to mitigate heat build up in the protected environment. The product offers the ability to perform discharges during peak times and recharge the CoolAir system off-peak as a method of load shifting, thereby reducing the cost of power generation.

XenSource, Inc. has launched the open source community release of Xen 3.0. The Xen project has delivered a new virtualisation feature targeted at enterprise infrastructure virtualisation needs, focusing on support for symmetric multi-processing (SMP), large server memory configurations and near-native performance, and offering for the first time an ability to virtualise all guest operating systems.

Terremark has announced the launch of its Secure Information Services Group (SIS) to provide professional information assurance services to its customers. The SIS Group will provide a suite of services, including vulnerability assessments and penetration tests, secure information systems design and implementation, information security policy and procedure development and review, incident preparation and response. IXEurope is to launch IXLAN as part of its IXConnect family of products to enable IXDatacentre customers to connect to each other over state-of-the-art, high-performance and cost-saving Ethernet networks. IXLAN is a monthly subscription-based product offering 10Mb, 100Mb, 1Gb and 10Gb ports. Customers connected are then able to buy and sell services to, or peer with, any other IXEurope customer connected to the same IXLAN.

Digital Realty Trust has announced that it has recently closed on several acquisitions located in strategic technology markets throughout the United States. The first acquisition, 251 Exchange Place in Herndon, Virginia, was purchased for approximately $12.9 million. The building is approximately 71,000 square feet and is 100% leased on a long-term basis to a leading metropolitan broadband network provider that uses it as an Internet gateway facility. The Company also recently acquired two buildings at the Met Center Business Park, located five miles southeast of downtown Austin.

Swiftroute, a fast growing managed hosting services provider in Singapore, will move their server infrastructure to Equinix's Singapore Internet Business Exchange (IBX) centre. By locating within Equinix's Singapore IBX, Swiftroute will benefit from the aggregation of networks operating in the centre, as well as the security, environmental and physical infrastructure of the IBX.

AT&T has announced it has won a three-year contract for networking security services from Lorillard Tobacco Co., the oldest and third largest tobacco company in the United States. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. AT&T will provide a network-based e-mail security and message management solution that enables Lorillard to ensure the integrity of electronic messaging before it enters the corporate network. The service offers a frontline defense against e-mail viruses, worms and spam that can threaten corporate assets and workforce productivity.

ColoSpace, Inc. has announced the opening of their 5th New England Data Center located in Rockland, MA. The Rockland facility will serve clients south of Boston as well as DR clients within Boston proper and Managed Hosting customers throughout the country. This new facility utilizes previously installed dark fiber by the electric utility National Grid (NEESCom) and lit by high capacity communications provider OnFiber.

E*TRADE FINANCIAL, a provider of financial services including trading, investing, banking, and lending solutions for retail and institutional customers, has licensed BladeLogic Operations Manager to manage its enterprise server infrastructure. BladeLogic Operations Manager is a suite of data center automation solutions that integrates server configuration management and compliance assurance capabilities, enabling IT organizations to provision, configure, and manage their server environments more efficiently while ensuring continuous compliance with security and regulatory policies.

Shutterfly, a leading independent online photo service, has signed a multi-year, multi million dollar contract to house their mission critical infrastructure at Terremark's NAP West facility in Santa Clara, California. Shutterfly is consolidating its infrastructure at Terremark's NAP West from three major data center facilities in Silicon Valley. The deployment will serve as Shutterfly's primary production data center. Terremark will provide Shutterfly with colocation, connectivity and managed services in a customer suite especially designed to meet Shutterfly requirements.
