Novell today announced that the BMW Group is using SUSE Linux Enterprise Server from Novell with integrated Xen* virtualization software to implement virtualized workloads in its data center, thus reducing hardware costs and simplifying deployment. After extensive testing by BMW IT Research Center staff in North America and Germany, the automobile manufacturer is going to deploy virtualized data center solutions using SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 with the open source Xen hypervisor on x86 servers using dual-core processors with Intel* Virtualization Technology.
Logicalis, Inc., (www.us.logicalis.com ) a global provider of high-performance technology solutions, today announced its acquisition of Carotek's Information Technology Division (Carotek ITD), based in Matthews, NC. Colombian airline Avianca has chosen IBM (NYSE: IBM) to operate and manage its information technology, in a deal valued at $12 million. Through this agreement signed at the end of the first quarter, IBM will provide services including administration of the airline's datacenter operations, end-user support services including helpdesk and onsite support, inventory administration, network management, and support for mainframe and midrange server systems.
Eversheds will be able to accelerate its IT Service improvement programme and undertake an immediate technology transformation thanks to a new IT managed services deal with Computacenter Services. The firm, which is one of the largest full-service law firms in the world, has outsourced its UK Service Desk, desk-side support and datacentre hosting and management to the IT services giant under a Â£27 million contract. Under the agreement, Computacenter Services will manage and host the firm's datacentre environments and provide 24x7 IT support services to 4,000 users across Europe and Asia.

Further analysis of a study launched last week by Partners in IT (conducted by market research firm Dynamic Markets) has revealed that 80% of all companies surveyed admit to having a problem with downtime of their IT systems. 74% of non-IT business managers admit to spending, on average 12% of their time every week fire-fighting problems that are caused by their IT systems - equating to 31 full working days per year.

Managed services provider, Kaseya, has made the first step towards integrating security into its existing services, with the release of Kaseya End Point Security (KES) in the Australia and New Zealand markets. Through technology from AVG's anti-malware product line, KES will immediately be available to all desktops, notebooks and file servers currently managed by Kaseya's IT framework. Kaseya launched an Australian office in Sydney approximately three months ago.
Unisys Corporation has announced that its Norwegian subsidiary signed a worldwide IT outsourcing contract with Norway-based Elopak, a leading global packaging company. Under the terms of the six-year contract, signed in the first quarter of 2007, Unisys will provide Elopak with a comprehensive suite of IT services. The contract has an estimated value to Unisys of USD 18.6 million. Elopak has 1,500 employees at 33 locations in 25 countries on five continents. The data centre services for Elopak will be provided by the Unisys Nordic outsourcing centre in Alings?s, Sweden.
Calyx has revealed ambitions to become the UK's largest single source of networking and IT services after receiving the go ahead for a management buyout (MBO). The company's management have secured backing from private equity house Alchemy Partners to acquire the London and Dublin listed firm in a deal worth GBP 70.2m. Calyx has seen its annual turnover rise to above GBP 80m following a series of purchases since it went public in 2005.
Cathay Pacific Airways has moved its Sydney data centre from Baulkham Hills to Rhodes under a three-year, multi-million dollar contract with technology outsourcer Unisys. Hardware and software was updated as part of the nearly year-long transition. The move, which was completed at the end of March, was aimed at giving Cathay greater processing power following its HK$8.22 billion takeover of rival Dragonair last year. Unisys now hosts Cathay's airline reservations, cargo and departure control systems following the move to the IT company's Rhodes facility.

Security Management Portal On-Demand is a service provider-oriented network security management system targeted at small and medium sized businesses. TelecityRedbus, one of Europe's leading data centre and managed services companies, today announced it has begun construction of a new Â£50m data centre in Central London. The Powergate facility will be one of the highest specification data centres in Europe, with a planned 25 megawatts of resilient power and approximately 50,000sq feet of capacity. The facility is expected to be ready for customers in Q2 2008. On completion, Powergate will be TelecityRedbus's eighth data centre in London.
BT Global Services has announced a three year deal to extend its existing managed network services contract with Swiss confectionary and FMCG giant Nestle. The deal follows a long-standing agreement between Nestle and BT Infonet. It includes the delivery of BT's MPLS IP-VPN service to 3,000 of Nestle's sites worldwide. It also includes audio-conferencing and the provision of BT's Managed Firewall service to control inbound and outbound internet traffic for Nestle worldwide.

The Pan European carrier COLT has announced that it will be building a new Data Centre outside of the London ring-road, the M25. The new Data Centre build is part of a major global client contract which has been signed in London to provide Data Centre and Managed Services. The client's name has not been revealed. The contract signed is for a ten year period and is claimed to be the largest ever won by COLT.
German systems integration & outsourcing subsidiary of DTAG, T-Systems, has concluded an agreement with German airline IT services company Lufthansa Systems to provide a global IP-based WAN using MPLS-based technology to 600 of Lufthansa Passage's locations worldwide. The WAN will be used to connect to Lufthansa Systems' Data Centre at Kelsterbach in Germany. It follows an IT cooperation agreement signed by T-Systems and Lufthansa Systems in January 2006.
A survey commissioned by Data Centre provider Digital Realty Trust (DRT) of IT professionals at 150 major American organisations (with USD1 billion or above turnover) has underlined the growth of Data Centres in the US.
Itex is doubling its current data centre capacity through the provision of a new purpose-built 6,000sq. ft facility on a site previously occupied by sister company The Guernsey Press. With its Gibauderie facility running at full capacity, the IT company is investing close to GBP 1million in the belief that strong demand for internet and IT operations management services will continue. This confidence is based on a positive economic outlook for Guernsey and new areas of business opportunity.
AT&T has announced a 3 million USD and three year contract to supply MPLS-based IP-VPN services to Sweden's Cardo Group, an international industrial and manufacturing group. The deal caters for IP connectivity to 188 of Cardo's sites in 29 countries. AT&T will also provide managed hosting services and network security services as part of the deal.
The Aperture Research Institute a wholly owned research subsidiary of Data Centre software firm Aperture Technologies - claims that 43% of Data Centres are running out of space and that rack power density is at an all time high. The Aperture Research Institute interviewed 100 Data Centre managers (who are responsible for around 600 Data Centres). From the survey some 90% of respondents stated that at least 75% of Data Centre space was fully allocated, and that 43% said that their Data Centre space was 90% allocated.
Reuters has met global information security standards for its Geneva technical centre, which supports all the firm's media and financial services. The news agency now has ISO 27001 certification for seven of its eight data centres, with the final UK installation to follow in November. The ISO 27001 standard requires an organisation to adhere to 133 controls or give a valid reason for not doing so. Certification for the Geneva data centre was achieved with Insight Consulting.
BT has signed a 20 million GBP outsource agreement with Hewden, the UK's largest plant hire company. Under the terms of the deal BT will provide its MPLS-based IP-VPN service to connect 100 of Hewden's sites and also provide a technology refresh programme with new PC's and local IT infrastructure.
Plans to stay on top of the international broadband league tables will fail unless the UK's data centre infrastructure is overhauled according to Alex Rabbetts, MD of data centre specialists Migration Solutions. He said: Unless there is concerted action, London will run out of data centre capacity by 2012 and not be able to support the new broadband networks and services. Plans for a coordinated approach between companies and government for deploying the new networks were published by the Broadband Stakeholder Group (BSG) in its recent report, 'Pipe Dreams?
Mobile phone provider Vodafone Group has announced that it is to open a shared services centre in Hungary by the end of 2007. The new centre in Budapest will be used to provide accounts payable transactions and B2B billing and will employ around 700 people and is likely to be eligible for an investment grant from the Hungarian Government for the investment.
BT Global Services has announced a network and IT outsourcing deal with the German publisher Druck- und Verlagshaus Frankfurt am Main GmbH (DuV), the publisher of German daily Frankfurter Rundschau. Under the terms of the contract precise duration and values are not disclosed BT will provide an MPLS based IP-VPN network to connect editorial offices in Frankfurt with remote printing sites. BT will also take over the management of the company's IT infrastructure including content applications and around 750 workstations.
Global express and logistics firm DHL plans to expand its Asia-Pacific information technology (IT) services data centre in Cyberjaya by a further half of its current size. With this expansion, DHL's investment in the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) will have exceeded RM1.5 billion (USD 435 million) since the centre's establishment almost 10 years ago. The centre will house 70 per cent more rack space for servers than the current facility and is expected to be completed over the next five years.
US-based Digital Realty Trust (DRT) has announced its first quarter 2007 financial results for the three months to the end of March 2007. The company saw first quarter revenues of USD 89 million with net income of USD 18.6 million and acquired five Data Centre properties for a total outlay of USD 160 million. The properties acquired included three in Virginia, one in New York and one in Santa Clara, California.
In September of this year, XS4ALL will be opening a new data centre offering collocation services. The company says that its power supply in its existing data centre is insufficient for the increasing demand for colocation. There will be further room for expansion in the current data centre in 2008, when extra power will be available. The extra location also makes it possible for customers to place servers at both centres so that they always have a backup in case of failure. XS4ALL will also use the new data centre for its own servers.
TelecityRedbus, a carrier neutral Pan European Data Centre operator, is considering a stock market flotation, according to a report in the UK's Daily Telegraph newspaper. The company is currently owned by a number of venture capital investors including 3i and US firm Oak Hill Investors. Deutsche Bank has been retained to advise on the strategic options for the company which may also include a trade sale. For the 2006 financial year according to a company statement made after the acquisition of Globix UK in September 2006 the company expected to have achieved GBP76 million of revenues.
Primus has added two additional Internet Data Centre facilities in Toronto and Ottawa offering collocation and managed services. In addition to the new centres in Toronto and Ottawa, Primus Business Services is currently assessing two further sites in Canada for development of additional data centres, with an expected opening in early 2008. Primus says the Canadian managed services industry is growing at around 10 per cent annually. Primus' managed services business surged ahead by 34 per cent in 2006.
Carrier neutral Data Centre provider IXEurope has announced that it is in preliminary talks with a number of potential parties which may or may not lead to an offer for the company. The company stated that the talks were at an early stage and further details would be forthcoming in due course the announcement was issued on May 21st. The firm has been quoted on the London AIM (Alternative Investment Market) since April 2006.
Queensland based finance group Suncorp is set to rationalise its data centre infrastructure as part of its plan to move into the A$212 million greenfield Polaris site at Springfield, southwest of Brisbane. Suncorp is an investor in the Polaris project, which is being managed by the Springfield Land Corporation. Along with NEC, Suncorp will be a key tenant in the new facility, taking up a third of the data centre floor space with its primary data centre.
Danish provider TDC Hosting part of TDC Solutions, the IT subsidiary of TeleDenmark Corporation has acquired Uni-2 from Tele-2 Denmark. As a result of the deal TDC Hosting has consolidated its position as Denmark's largest hosting provider with a 20% market share. Uni-2 specialises in providing services to the Small & Medium Enterprise sector and has around 3,500 customers.
Severn Trent Water has started the procurement process to outsource its IT data centre and support services. The water company intends to appoint a number of suppliers to provide data centre operations for some 120 company sites and 6,500 users, as well as associated support for the next seven years. Key business systems are hosted primarily from one data centre, with back-up centres housing equipment for resilience and reliability.
US-based Managed Hosting provider RackSpace has announced its final quarter results for the three months to the end of March 2007. The company reported revenues of USD 67 million and USD 227 million for the full year a year on year revenue increase of 61%. The company added some 3,000 new customers during the 12 month period and 900 for the final quarter.
According to press reports in India, France Telecom and two other international companies are understood to have expressed interest in acquiring GTL's Enterprise Networks and Managed Services businesses. The Mumbai-based GTL intends to hive-off the two business domains in order to concentrate more on its telecom network-related business. Enterprise Network offers services including converged enterprise networks, contact centre solutions, disaster recovery, security solutions and professional services.
Global supplier Rittal has now launched LCP Plus, its liquid-based server cooling in the Australian market. LCP Plus provides consistent and even distribution of chilled air in front of the 19" level, high airflow rates to meet data centre standards and provision for a cooling performance of up to 30 kW. The LCP also possesses its own regulation system, which can be integrated into a monitoring network via a Computer Multi Control Top Concept (CMC-TC). Local customers include the NSW Department of Commerce and the Department of Defence.
IP Infrastructure and services provider Tulip IT Services has announced the launch of its managed services portfolio, including data centre services and video services for enterprises. The company also launched its first data centre in Delhi. The company currently provides data connectivity through VPNs, network integration and rural connectivity. Tulip IT Services is looking to lease space in its data centre to companies including Telecom service providers and small and medium enterprises. The company has invested Rs 30 crore in its first data centre.
In the US HP has announced the launch of a series of initiatives designed to improve the performance of a client's blade server installation. Called HP Proactive BladeSystem the service includes HP blade servers, storage and HP management system software. The service is aimed at customers with over 50 blade server and includes a monthly assessment and advice by HP for Data Centre audits; advice on management, layout, security and overall best practice improvement procedures including ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) processes.
HP and Bank of India have announced that they have won a leading IT outsourcing award. The firms' IT outsourcing contract were awarded the Best IT Infrastructure category of the Outsourcing Centre's Outsourcing Excellence Awards. HP manages the bank's entire IT infrastructure, including data warehousing, core banking solution and document imaging for more than 1,000 branches, as well as maintaining data centre, call centre, help desk and disaster recovery facilities.
US-based Data Centre management software company Aperture Technologies has announced a partnership with engineering and consulting specialist Environmental Systems Design (ESD) who provides advice on building and Data Centre design. Under the agreement ESD will apply the engineering data included in Aperture's VISTA symbol repository to assist in its consulting projects. This will be included in ESD's operational plans and processes that are being developed for its Data Centre clients including architects, building developers, facilities managers and property managers.
EDS has signed an agreement with development agency the World Bank to provide software applications; customer relationship management; technology management and information management as part of an initial three year master agreement. The contract involves EDS using its BestShore local support and delivery models as well as its off-shore MphasIS subsidiary based in Bangalore. Using a follow the sun support process to support the Bank's operations in different time zones.

Virtualisation is moving into the mainstream with 50% of IT professionals already using this new technology, or planning to do so within the next 18 months, reveals a survey conducted by email research specialists, emedia, using its RapidResearch service. The survey also indicates that over half (52%) of respondents are saying virtualisation systems introduce some new security challenges. The main ones amongst those mentioned, include consideration for patching and update (32%), guest-to-guest attacks (27%), and the addition of new host software (22%).

Mellon Financial Corporation will significantly expand its data center northeast of Pittsburgh. Representing an investment of approximately $70 million, the expansion project will increase staffing in the Pittsburgh area by up to 200 positions. The expanded facility will serve as one of two data centers supporting the global operations of The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation, which will be formed by the proposed merger of Mellon Financial Corporation and The Bank of New York. Pending regulatory approvals, the merger is expected to close on or about July 1, 2007.

SAVVIS, Inc. (Nasdaq: SVVS), a global leader in IT infrastructure services for business applications, today announced it has sold assets in two adjacent data centers in Santa Clara, CA to Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) for $200 million, including $190 million cash and forgiveness of approximately $10 million of previously-advanced revenue. The $200 million consideration also reflects early termination of service contracts between SAVVIS and Microsoft related to those data centers.
