KDDI To Invest In Global Data Centre Expansion

KDDI has announced a global expansion of its data centre facilities with a spend of 25 billion yen (€156 million; GBP119 million) over the next three years.

Its subsidiary, Telehouse Europe, will provide an initial investment of GBP 80 million in a new build, and almost double its London Docklands data centre facilities. The London development will see the building of a new 8-storey, 12,000 m2 state-of-the-art data centre, named Telehouse South, adjacent to its two existing data centres in the heart of London’s Docklands. Construction will begin later this year and the new facilities are scheduled to come on-stream at the beginning of 2010, ramping-up to meet the growing demands of City-based financial institutions, online and media businesses, global enterprises and the nearby London 2012 Olympics. Telehouse South is currently in the design phase and the facilities will target media and internet-based and enterprise customers particularly those requiring specialist secure facilities in order to comply with Sarbanes Oxley, MiFID and other regulatory and corporate governance directives.

In parallel with the London expansion and in order to offer inter-linked global data centre services, Telehouse will invest in an additional 15,000 m2 of new facilities near Paris and open a new 1,500 m2 data centre - its first - in Singapore.

Telehouse has recently opened a data centre in Beijing and already operates in New York, Los Angeles and Hong Kong. In the longer term, additional expansion across nine countries in South East Asia, Eastern Europe and emerging markets is also planned. By 2010 Telehouse aims to be operating over 100,000 m2 of high specification networked data centres worldwide.

In 2006, Telehouse achieved ISO/IEC 27001:2005 (Information Security) and ISO 9001:2000 (Quality Management) accreditations across all its sites in the UK and France. It is currently working towards becoming the first data centre facilities to attain ISO 14001:2004 (Environmental Management System) accreditation.

Telehouse facilities in London Docklands have become the biggest internet communications hub in Europe, with over 700 customers including telecoms carriers, internet service providers, media companies and corporate customers. Telehouse is also home to the London Internet Exchange (LINX), one of the world’s largest Internet Exchange Points.
