Offshore Hosting Report Cites Channel Islands and Switzerland Highest Ranking in Tax Efficient Scorecard

A new report by consultancy BroadGroup, cites the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey, and Switzerland as among the highest ranking for tax efficiency and overall attractiveness in offshore hosting.

The report, Tax Efficient Hosting – Global Competition and Growth in Offshore Hosting - draws attention to growth occurring in offshore hosting, which is currently driven by higher taxes imposed in mature markets, competition in foreign inward investment e-commerce and online gaming.

This study suggests that Tax Efficient Hosting will become increasingly important as a source of competitive advantage to companies in the e-commerce sector. It also identifies countries in the Middle East and North Africa among rising stars in the increasingly competitive offshore markets.

Included in the survey are profiles of 33 jurisdictions which include details of the most attractive investment zones in terms of economic incentives available, Data Centre facilities, incentives for the online gaming/gambling sector and the telecommunications infrastructure within each jurisdiction.

New growth will come from e-commerce and the retail sector who are seeking low tax centres where sales taxes as well as corporate taxes can be sharply reduced in order to remain competitive. In many emerging markets there is a shortage of both alternative telecommunications networks and large scale dedicated hosting facilities which means that costs can be high and resilience relatively low.

In the medium term the survey believes that “near shore” jurisdictions such as the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, and lower tax regimes such as Switzerland and Ireland offer the best compromise between tax savings and a high quality hosting and telecommunications support infrastructure for the large company.

The report also details the critical differences between jurisdictions, and provides easy-to-access summaries of the key relevant conditions prevailing in each market, in addition to a scorecard for each market.
