Amazon, Google, Microsoft Announce Record AI Infrastructure Spending

The three largest cloud providers have collectively committed over $200 billion in data centre capital expenditure for 2026-2027.

In a series of earnings announcements, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure have collectively committed over $200 billion in data centre capital expenditure for the 2026-2027 period - a 45% increase over the previous two-year cycle. The surge is driven almost entirely by AI infrastructure requirements, including GPU clusters, liquid cooling systems, and high-density power distribution. When Meta's approximately $50 billion commitment is included, the four largest hyperscalers are spending a combined $280 billion on infrastructure in 2026 alone.

Microsoft leads with $80 billion, followed by Google at $68 billion, Amazon at $65 billion, and Meta at approximately $50 billion. The spending spans every continent: Microsoft has announced or completed investments in Wisconsin ($13 billion), Wyoming (3,200 acres), Norway ($6.2 billion), Thailand ($1 billion), and Saudi Arabia. Google is building in Austria, India ($15 billion Andhra Pradesh), and Malaysia ($2 billion). Amazon has committed $25 billion to Mississippi and $5.3 billion to Saudi Arabia. Meta's $27 billion Louisiana campus and $10 billion Indiana facility are among the largest individual projects.

The international expansion reflects several strategic imperatives. Data sovereignty regulations in the EU, India, and the Middle East require local processing of sensitive data. Latency requirements for AI inference mean that compute must be positioned closer to end users globally. And power constraints in traditional US markets (particularly Northern Virginia's congested PJM queue) are forcing hyperscalers to build where power is available rather than where connectivity is historically densest.

The hyperscalers are also increasingly vertically integrating their power supply. Microsoft has signed nuclear PPAs and is investing in small modular reactor development. Google has partnered with Fervo Energy for 150 MW of enhanced geothermal by 2028 and with Ormat Technologies for conventional geothermal in Nevada. Amazon's agreement with Talen Energy at the Susquehanna nuclear plant secured 960 MW of behind-the-meter power. This shift from being passive consumers of grid electricity to active participants in power generation represents a fundamental change in the relationship between the technology sector and the energy industry.

The implications for the broader data centre ecosystem are transformative. Construction costs have risen to $11.3 million per MW (JLL), driven by competition for materials, equipment (particularly transformers with 36-month lead times), and skilled labour. Colocation operators report that pre-leasing is at all-time highs, with multiple markets sold out through 2028. The total capital flowing into data centre infrastructure now exceeds that of any other commercial real estate sector globally - and by a wide margin.
