EdgeConneX has announced plans to develop 75 MW of new data centre capacity across two emerging markets, with 50 MW planned for Mumbai, India and 25 MW for Johannesburg, South Africa. The combined $380 million investment marks EdgeConneX's first entry into both the Indian and African data centre markets.
The Mumbai facility will be located in the Navi Mumbai data centre corridor, which has rapidly emerged as India's premier hyperscale destination. The 50 MW facility will serve the growing demand from cloud providers, Indian enterprises, and global companies expanding their digital presence in the subcontinent. India's data centre market is expected to more than double in capacity by 2028, driven by data localisation requirements and rapid digital adoption.
The Johannesburg facility will be one of the largest carrier-neutral data centres in sub-Saharan Africa, positioned to serve as a regional hub for cloud, content, and enterprise workloads. South Africa's data centre market, while still nascent, has attracted growing interest from international operators as African internet penetration continues to accelerate. EdgeConneX expects both facilities to be operational by early 2027.
